When students come across unfamiliar words when reading, it's a good idea for them to look them up so they can work out exactly what they mean in context. But unless they learn them and use them, they're likely to forget them. No one can keep a whole dictionary in their head, and looking up words in a big dictionary repeatedly is unproductive, so it's useful for students to create a personalised vocabulary book to help keep a record of new words learned to increase their command over language both when reading and when writing. When learning a new word, it's not enough for students to just learn the word as they've found it, and what part of speech it is, but they also need to learn to include the related word forms and the parts of speech they fall under and their etymology. Synonyms, antonyms, roots, prefixes and suffixes can all be discussed and added, and for younger students, a picture to help visualise the word, and how it sounds in context can be helpful. Most importantly, when students find words that are new to them, they won't find them in alphabetical order. If they try to index them in a standard way, there's no guarantee that the words will fall neatly in place - in fact the words will most likely come in a random order. But there is a way round this - and, in this class, students will learn an easy way to index and look up words so they can use their vocabulary book as a personalised dictionary and record of their ongoing learning journey in relation to words. In this one-off class, students will create a personalised vocabulary book, create an index that works, enter at least 2-3 words into the book, and index them appropriately. In the process, we'll discuss the history of the English language, synonyms, antonyms, parts of speech, word formation (root words, prefixes, suffixes) and the grammatical implications of some of these, and go into the basics of etymology and its importance. Metas de aprendizaje
Students will build a robust tool for learning new words, and create a resource which will make it easy for them to enter words into that will provide an easy personalised retrieval system for learning new words.
They will increase their appreciation of and ability to work with language, enhancing their ability to integrate spelling, and grammar, and link word formations and origins to history and awareness of different cultures (eg Latin, Greek, Germanic, French)

Lista de útiles escolares
For this class, students will need to get a small notebook ideally with at least 200 pages to use specifically for a vocabulary book. I recommend a note book of this type: (UK size: A6; US size: Junior Legal) They will need a standard stationery kit - pencil, eraser, sharpener, ruler and access to a computer to look up definitions of words on line. An over-ear gaming-type set of headphones with built-on microphone and a noise-cancelling feature is recommended for best audio quality for communication in classes. Please note that unless students have a very good reason not to have their video on during class, I expect students to be visible and participate actively in classes I teach. The digital classroom is a social space shaped by our intentions and our activity - and I encourage participants to actively build the kind of space they feel comfortable in, and to actively work on creating a space in which others can also feel comfortable being and acting in. Outschool does provide a 'verification' system for those who have good reasons not to participate visually, and I will respect and support that fully. Please consult https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/4063624-learner-verification for further information and contact 'verification@outschool.com' at least a week before the start of your first class to allow time for the verification process to be completed. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.
