In this class you will learn the basics of bucket drumming. We will explore the different types of sounds that can be created by hitting various areas of the bucket, proper playing technique, as well as how to read and play rhythms. This class will be structured as an interactive drum circle type format. Students will be playing for nearly the entire class time. A few breaks will be scheduled in so students can rest their hands, ask questions, and discuss what we have played. I will teach by demonstrating the rhythms, saying the rhythms, then showing the rhythms. Students will imitate what I show them. We will take 5-10 minutes at the beginning of class to discuss how we ready rhythms, then play for the rest of the class time. **We will usually utilize an "animal rhythm game" where students will choose animals and we will use the syllables to create our own rhythms to play. Depending on how long this takes (usually if there are 9 kids it will take almost all of the class time) we will then move into other areas and types of drumming** My teaching style for this class is fast paced and interactive. Although, students will be given opportunity to pause, ask for help, and explore different techniques and rhythms. Learners will get to interact with me by asking questions, answering questions, and demonstrating rhythms. They will get to interact with each other by performing for each other in a drum circle style free drum, as well as discussing why bucket drumming is important, what they like about it, and helping each other read rhythms and perform. Students do not need any required experience to participate in this class. Everyone is welcome to join the class. However, after teaching this class for over a month, I would say that if your child has already taken percussion lessons this class may be below the level they are playing at. While they are more than welcome to join the class and try it out, I will generally orient it towards the beginners who have never played before in our group.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will read standard notation of rhythms (quarter note, half note, eighth note, sixteenth notes, and rests).
Students will vocalize, perform, or otherwise demonstrate rhythm reading through performing written and spoken rhythms.

Lista de útiles escolares
- One bucket/trashcan. (Preferably a one gallon bucket, but any bucket/trashcan will do) - Two drum sticks. These can be actual drumsticks or wooden dowel rods from a craft store. You could even use the handles of wooden spoons or rulers. These "drum sticks" will preferably be about 1/2 in by 12 inches. You can find drumsticks on Amazon that will work well and usually cost around $7-9, or a local craft store should have some dowel rods that would work.

Hello hello! My name is Kendall Rhymer (you can call me Kendall or Ms. Kendall. I'm happy with either!). I use the pronouns she/her/hers. I love teaching reading, math, music, and art. I currently spend my days teaching special education in a public elementary school, but my background includes music education, private lessons, and preschool.
Here on Outschool you'll find me teaching all sorts of classes. Here are the main types of classes I offer. During the school year I typically drop a lot of listings, so please feel free to reach out if there's something here you would like to see and I will get back to you regarding scheduling.
Music: I teach piano, ukulele, and percussion. I offer private one to one lessons and group classes for various ages. I offer percussion classes for all levels from beginner to advanced and all ages from preschool to teenagers. Ukulele and piano are offered from beginniner to intermediate for all ages. Preschool lessons are for kiddos between 2 and 6. These classes focus on dexterity, fine motor skills, rhythm, and just having fun with music. Elementary level lessons are for ages 6-12. These classes are more introductory and are structured to be more accessible for younger students just beginning their musical journey. Typically, these classes are more structured, have a lot more games, and focus on introductory level musical concepts. Middle School and up lessons are less structured and allow students to really guide the lessons to fit their passions and interests.
Academic Tutoring (Reading, Math, and Writing): I teach special education in a resource setting at my current day job. I find a lot of joy in helping students access the content in their general education classes. Academic tutoring can be as personalized as you would like from one to one tutoring on reading, writing, and math to group classes on specific topics. These classes are meant to be supplemental instruction to help students close gaps in their learning similar to what students receive when they get special education services. However, having an IEP or disability is not required to participate in these classes. They are for any student who wants a little extra help or to learn more about something they don't feel confident in.
Social/Creative Clubs and Classes: This is a new area I am growing in as an educator. I work with a lot of students with a variety of different behavioral, social, and emotional needs. I love helping students learn about themselves and the world around them. I offer social groups, clubs, and classes focused on helping students with anxiety, Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and other neurodivergence practice their social skills and find safe places to participate in their passions. I am Autistic myself and I want to create safe spaces students can grow and express themselves. These classes are typically less structured and will involve special interests like Pokemon, drawing, book clubs, anime, etc. This is also where I like to experiment with new class ideas that involve other things I'm interested in like reading, drawing, plants, dogs and cats, knitting, and more!
I really value the whole child in my teaching. My goal is not only to help students connect with the content they are learning, but to connect with the child as a person and to foster their love of learning and their healthy growth and development. I am patient, encouraging, and excited in my teaching. I want my students to have a fun, express themselves, and feel like their opinions are valued and respected in my classes. After all, I'm teaching for them, not me. It is really important to me that the student gets the experience they want out of my classes, and I will do whatever I can to ensure they get that positive experience.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music as well as Philosophy and Religion. I have a Master's Degree in Percussion Performance. I am currently in a licensing/M.A. program for Special Education at Western Carolina University.
Here's a little bit more about me as a person:
I love reading and doing yoga. I love new and experimental types of music. I have three cats (Salem, Pete and Gigi) and a dog (Mila!) as well as A LOT of fish. I love tea and some of my favorite musicians are Taylor Swift, The Oh Hellos, and a lot of folk music from Appalachia. I live in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains in Western North Carolina. I'm about an hour from the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. In my free time I enjoy hiking, reading, crocheting/knitting, and playing video games like Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing. I love pokemon and have just started watching anime in the last year or so.
~~I welcome all students regardless of age, ability/disability, sexuality, gender, religion, race, etc. I hope to be a safe space and an ally to all my students from all types of backgrounds and experiences <3~~
I hope to see you in class soon!
***Please message me with any scheduling concerns and I will try to accommodate you as best I can***
