Week 1: Origins and Early Years
Introduction to the origins of Broadway musical theater, the first musicals, and key figures such as George M. Cohan. Students will also learn about the development of musical comedy and explore the social and cultural context of early Broadway musicals.

Week 2: Golden Age of Broadway
The rise of the Golden Age of Broadway, exploring key musicals and creative figures of the era such as Rodgers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, and Gershwin. Students will learn about the social and political climate of the era and its impact on Broadway musicals.

Week 3: Revolution and Change
The 1960s and 70s saw a revolution in Broadway musical theater, as new voices emerged and new forms of musicals were created. Students will learn about the impact of shows like Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar, and explore the social and cultural context of this era.

Week 4: The Modern Era
The modern era of Broadway musical theater, examining the emergence of new forms of musicals such as jukebox musicals and mega-musicals. Students will learn about the creative figures and shows of this era, and explore the impact of technology on musical theater.

Week 5: Diversity and Inclusion
The role of diversity and inclusion in Broadway musical theater, exploring how the industry has evolved to better represent diverse voices and stories. Students will learn about shows and figures who have helped to broaden the scope of Broadway musical theater.

Week 6: The Future of Broadway
Looking to the future of Broadway musical theater, exploring emerging trends and new directions in the industry. Students will learn about innovative shows and figures who are pushing the boundaries of what musical theater can be, and will reflect on the impact of Broadway musicals on American culture.
