There is only one place on earth where proboscis monkeys, orangutans, pygmy elephants, flying snakes and lizards, clouded leopards, sun bears, and king cobras all live together in an ancient rainforest. The third largest island in the world, Borneo is located on the equator in Southeast Asia. Through crafts, live animals, discussion, and photos, students will become immersed in the rainforest habitats of Borneo. They will have the opportunity to be introduced to some of the most interesting native wildlife by watching photo slideshows, listening to animal vocalizations, playing games, completing coloring sheets, and creating an orangutan or proboscis monkey mask craft. The teacher recently spent a year living on the island of Borneo volunteering with both orangutan and sea turtle conservation, living at a home-stay, teaching environmental education, and searching for wild animals whenever possible. While sharing her adventures from rainforests around the world, Ms. Amalia will share many of her own photos while guiding learners to become familiar with unique wildlife, rainforest ecology, food webs, and the biodiversity of Borneo. Students will consistently be introduced to naturalist terms that describe animal behavior (eg: carnivore, nocturnal, arboreal, etc.), as well as animal classification terms (eg: invertebrate, amphibian, etc.). Did you know that in the Indonesian language, "orang" means person, and "hutan" means forest? Or that the only place that proboscis monkeys live in the wild is in the mangrove forests of Borneo? Learn more in this unique online summer camp experience! The daily schedule is outlined below: Day 1: Orangutans, Proboscis Monkeys, and Tarsiers Day 2: Clouded Leopards, Sun Bears, and Pygmy Elephants Day 3: Pythons, Cobras, and Flying Lizards Students will also have the opportunity to interact with the Nature Explorers International classroom program animals, including: Scaly: the Corn Snake Slimy: the Tiger Salamander Lizzie: The Leopard Gecko Topics may touch on the elements of habitat, rainforest characteristics, endangered animals, great apes, orangutans, primates, deforestation, primatology, herpetology, biology, ethnobotany, entomology, birding, wildlife biology, scientific field work, or volunteer travel.
