IMPORTANT** It is okay if a student has already read the series and wants to join the class to re-read the story; however, if they do, please know we will only talk about first book. Spoilers will not be tolerated as to give a fair experience for everyone. Please message me if you prefer a book club for the series instead that is more flexible in which book we talk about.**

Students are expected to have read about 3 chapters (about 30-40 pages, please see homework section for an outline) before each class and will have a discussion about the plot, characters, and themes during class. Pre-reading questions/discussion topics will be posted in the classroom before each class to allow students time to think and to help them formulate their own thoughts about the book as they read. These questions will help students be aware of the book events and take note of key characters and plot devices. Pre-reading questions/discussion topics are to help students take notes to bring insights and questions to the discussion, but they do not need to be filled out for the teacher.

Each class will begin with the students working on summarizing what they read and bringing their own questions about the story, then students will answer any discussion questions created by the teacher. These discussion questions will be based within the 8 reading strategies of summarizing, comparing and contrasting, organizing plot events, predicting the story, asking questions, connecting with the text, and inferencing implications in the story. There will be no formal worksheets or homework other than reading the books and preparing with the pre-reading questions. This is to give a free foam for the class and allow students to talk about what they are reading and their thoughts about the series. Students will be encouraged to ask their own questions as well. This will allow a space to find the enjoyment of reading as we discuss together the books.

In-class discussions topics will include subjects how is Percy an engaging narrator, how is Camp Half-blood organized, what impression does the book cover give to them as a reader, making predictions about the story as it progresses through each book, and contrasting the characters while tracking their developments throughout the story. I will provide visuals for the students as we organize the story, learn new vocabulary words, and discuss the different characters.

At the end of class, students will collaborate and work together to give it a book review. This will help students review what they read and discuss what aspects are needed for a compelling story. Students will also be asked if their perspective of the characters or the story has changed as they read. Once we review the finished book, students will work on predicting what the next book may include and how it will expand with the story.

Orientación para padres
Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a very popular series. The writing is age appropriate for children within ages 10+ but can be good for mature readers. Content warnings (potential spoilers) for the first book includes: Mild fighting violence- demigods (children of gods: half-mortal, half- immortal) learn how to fight Greek monsters who attack and try to kill them. Death- Greek monsters are shown to die by turning into dust. Percy slices off the head of Medusa. Injury- Percy and his friends sometimes sustain injuries as they fight. Bullying- One character bullies Percy while he's at camp. Child neglect- Some of the characters have backgrounds where they come from hard family backgrounds due to one parent being a God and absent in family life. Lotus Casino- Percy and his friends get trapped in a hotel casino that makes them believe they want to stay there forever. Greek Mythology- References to Greek myths and the incorporation of the Greek Gods in the world is explained but does not give negative to any other religion. Percy travels to the Underworld. Discussion and comparison of original Greek myths may be talked about in class if necessary.
