Experiencia de clase

Grado de EE. UU. 5 - 8
In this discussion-based class, learners will study this highly inspirational and heart-warming factual novel about September 11, 2001, and the following days, when thirty-eight airplanes headed for the United States were rerouted to land in Gander , Newfoundland due to the U.S. airspace closing. The members of this small and tight knit community were instantly called upon to care for thousands of travelers, their most basic needs, concerns, emotional needs, and caring for their spirit too. This story is incredibly extraordinary about what people can do when called to respond to those in instant need.

First of all, learners will be asked to read the entire novel, and take notes in a packet sent by the instructor upon registration, regarding topics such as themes, descriptions / adjectives of the Canadian townspeople and the pilots, passengers, flight crew, conflicts, important quotes, and resolutions prior to our first meeting. Therefore, a main skill enforced in this class is to read the novel and practice note-taking skills to be used in discussions.

The first class will be based on discussion from the learners based on the notes taken. Learners will quickly feel comfortable adding to the discussions in a safe, positive environment.

The second class will include a discussion-based format on comprehension of events, turning points, conflicts, decisions, character development, vocabulary, protagonists, antagonists, figurative language, critical settings, problem solving, resolutions all based on the events that are presented in this YA level novel.
Metas de aprendizaje
Learners' goals include growth in understanding the earth-shattering day of 9/11 and the days that followed. Learners will gain a growth in vocabulary, decision making, conflicts/ resolutions, quirks and needs of individuals and animals all brought together on that fateful day, the implications of being present for others in the worst of moments and how strangers can quickly become family, turning points and conflicts followed by resolutions (with the knowledge that not all resolutions are positive), Most importantly while this novel reinforces all aspects of note-taking and exposition, it is a critical reminder that in the worst of moments, that best can shine from complete strangers.

Orientación para padres
The back story occurs from the day of 9/11 and the effect is planes were grounded and 38 of those aircraft landed in Gander, Newfoundland. Having a background discussion with your learner prior to the class would be beneficial. While the story plot is , in majority, about what happened after the planes landed and how the towns' people and those on the planes supported each other, no matter race or nationality, two scenes should be mentioned here; 1. Parents on one of the planes were in search of information about their son who is a firefighter at the Twin Towers and at the conclusion of the novel the reader learns the son did not make it out of the towers. Secondly, when the planes are readying to travel, near the conclusion of the novel, there is one example of some passengers exhibiting fear of not wanting to travel with some passengers of middle eastern descent. The captain of the aircraft positively works through this moment. Regarding questions about specifics from 9/11 or reasons behind the events, I will be sticking to specific facts, not my thoughts or own ideas, regarding questions . For direct quoting of facts and back story details, I will use Alan's Gratz's Ground Zero novel (especially the afterward) as factual details. The class will be focused on the heartwarming events in Gander and the positive themes we can learn as a from the many examples presented in the book being studied.

There is nothing more exciting than when you see a student think deeply, question ideas, share a new thought, or explore character’s actions/ decisions or a quote or a purpose the author had when writing a novel and then connect the information to learner’s own story in life. Helping students reach their full potential, and beyond, in a setting that is safe, exciting, creative and funny is what teaching is all about to me. The climate has to be one that is free from bullying, pressure, and negative interactions and, instead, is one that students can’t wait to get to as they know the time in that class will be rewarding, creative, stimulating, and allow them to be who they really are and share what they want to share. There is nothing more exciting, as a teacher, then when that light bulb illuminates and a student feels confident to share and take an idea, quote, author’s purpose or decision from a book and see how it can affect real life or when a learner sees their full potential, in the written word they create.
We can make literature, come alive in a really fun, fast-paced active discussion filled atmosphere.

My background professionally is having taught third grade, fifth grade, and Sixth grade language arts for 33 years with a background in psychology, elementary education, school administration and an extensive background in overnight camping. My favorite teaching topics include writing poetry, creative and nonfiction writing, and reading/sharing outstanding literature with discussions that bring critical thinking skills and life lessons to the students. I am excited to bring this teaching to an environment that is bully free with motivated students in a small group setting.I always look forward to reading my students work as I see such brilliance in people of this age.

I can be found in the upstate NY, most often being out on the lake in my boat from spring to fall (I love being on water!), playing guitar and singing, collecting Pez, reading , cooking and baking, volunteering in the community as often as I can to make things better for others, and spending lots of time with Derby, the wonder dog, my amazingly bright and talented rescue dog who undoubtably will make visits into the virtual classroom. I also enjoy bike riding, yoga, and meditation. Most importantly, I place great emphasis on finding ways, small and big ways, that will allow my students and myself to make our mark in this world and make it a better place for others. The small ways are most often the best ways and I believe students are brilliant people who can absolutely change the world.
