Experiencia de clase

Stevenson's popular gothic classic dramatises the sense of divided personality that we all experience at times, as we struggle to take the right path through life. This novel therefore provides an excellent basis for discussion of topics that are relevant to us all.

Over the course of ten weeks, students will receive a thorough grounding in all of the major themes and key characters of the novel. They will have many opportunities to discuss their ideas and to express them in writing. Written activities will be carefully guided so that students consistently achieve success and gain confidence and fluency.

All materials are provided as part of the enrollment fee, including a study guide with quiz questions and a textbook with writing exercises.

Classes will be a mixture of review, aimed at embedding key facts about the novel's plot, themes, characters and context, and close study of particular passages, leading to class discussion and written exercises.

The lesson schedule is as follows:

1. Chapter One: Characterisation of Hyde
2. Chapter Two: Utterson Meets Hyde
3. Chapter Three: The Theme of Duality
4. Chapter Four: Hyde the 'Ape'
5. Chapter Five: Jekyll’s False Idea of Freedom
6. Chapter Six: The Theme of Friendship: Jekyll and Lanyon
7. Chapter Seven: The Theme of Friendship: Jekyll and Utterson
8. Chapter Eight: Utterson Leads the Charge
9. Chapter Nine: The Evil Results of Jekyll’s Investigations
10. Chapter Ten: Jekyll’s Evasion of Responsibility

Orientación para padres
There are two violent scenes in the novel, which some younger readers may find disturbing. The first is when Edward Hyde tramples on a young girl in Chapter One. The second is when Edward Hyde murders Sir Danvers Carew in Chapter Four. Any other violence is only referred to rather than described.
