In the ONGOING bi-weekly class, join others in this Book Club focusing on the book series: I Survived... by Lauren Tarshis. Currently, there are 20+ books in the series. **Note due to the extensive nature of the class relying heavily on discussion, the class minimum (4 learners) must be met for the class to meet. Notice will be given to parents if there is a cancelation or postponement of a week, etc. I use the Outschool Classroom for all communication.** We will focus on 1 book each week, then move on to another book in the series, continuing until we have enjoyed all titles. The cycle will repeat, so it doesn't matter what week the learner begins. Please see the list below and in the HOMEWORK section to know what book should be read for each class. A file will also be delivered in the welcome email after enrollment. The I Survived... series is perfect for upper elementary grade readers--those who love fiction, adventure, suspense, history, and/or are reluctant readers. As an author, Tarshis writes fictional storytelling that hooks all readers from the start, by immersing readers into feeling like they are actually living through history's most exciting and terrifying events. Being introduced to the series by my own son who "hated reading", I dove into the series myself, loved them (even as an adult), and thus introduced them to kids. As a previous elementary school librarian, this was a series that couldn't stay on my shelves! The FORMAT of the club will be a mix of class discussion and a teacher-guided presentation. The discussion will be guided by the teacher and the students. This is a social class for learners to express their love of the series. There may also be short video clips documenting the historical event related to the title being discussed. Deep thinking involving the unique characters, and the series' themes of persistence, resiliency, family, etc will be the focus. We look for patterns in the author's writing, deep dive into character traits, and ask questions, such as What would you do? The class relies heavily on ACTIVE student participation whether verbally or via chat. Students are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and discuss openly in the classroom. This MAY NOT be the class for learners needing an atmosphere of all learners on mute. I try to replicate a truly interactive “in-person” book club. Zoom classes do present challenges, so the rule of being kind overshadows purposeful talking over others and not being patient waiting for a turn. Thus I do moderate fairly encouraging hand-raising so everyone can have their voice heard. HOMEWORK: At home, students will read 1 book each week for each class, and be ready to discuss it in the book club. To fully benefit from each class and discussion the weekly book must have been read before the start of each class. With a 3rd/4th-grade reading level and an average of 100 pages, most kids get very wrapped into the plot that they don't want to put the book down, so they are able to complete it rather quickly. Reading is required before each class and students are required to have a copy of the book discussed. Students are welcome to access the work by audio, print, or digital copy. ---------- ABOUT THE SERIES: "When disaster strikes, heroes are made. With relatable characters and riveting plotlines, the I Survived books are perfect for reluctant readers or any young reader who enjoys an action-packed, page-turning thriller. Each book also contains several pages of nonfiction content, encouraging readers to further explore the historical topic." ---Amazon ------------ CLASS BOOK TITLES: To fully benefit from each class and discussion the book must have been read before the start of each class. ***(Specific Dates are also listed in the homework section below AND listed in the printed file in your welcome email)*** *****The schedule is subject to change but will always be up-to-date in the Outschool classroom. **** 7/5 - Class 24: I Survived the California Wildfires, 2018 7/12 - Class 25: I Survived True Stories: Nature Attacks! "Parents need to know that Lauren Tarshis's I Survived series is captivating, emotional, and historically accurate. The kids in these stories face scary situations in their first-person accounts of the disasters; they're often alone, hurt, and in an unfamiliar place. But because almost everyone around them is trying to help the kids survive or find their parent, once the worst is over, the overall feeling from the books is optimistic. The end of each story of survival gives a glimpse into the post-disaster life of the family and ends with an upbeat note."
****** In each class, a short video clip will be shown about the true historical event and/or disaster. This allows for some background knowledge and understanding of the story in the novel.

As a librarian, much of my day was finding the perfect book for each child. For some, the love of reading doesn't come naturally, so through relationships, intuition, and extensive personal reading of kids' literature, I found each kiddo's gem of a book. It was and continues to be my passion--to inspire the love of reading.
