Experiencia de clase

This book club is designed for book lovers who want to explore multiple genres, interesting storylines, and authors! Each week, we will complete a fill-in-the-blank style book report as we engage in discussions about the selected book.

Class also includes general story knowledge such as an author study, the 5 steps of plot mountain, different points of view, vocabulary, and terminology. Each class concludes with a fun Blooket game featuring facts and trivia related to the book!

**Students should plan for an hour of reading a week which breaks down to about 10 minutes daily, including no reading on the day of class.

January - The House at the Edge of Magic - Amy Sparkes [Nine is an orphan pickpocket determined to escape her life in the Nest of a Thousand Treasures. When she steals a house-shaped ornament from a mysterious woman’s purse, she knocks on its tiny door and watches it grow into a huge, higgledy-piggeldy house. Inside she finds a host of magical and brilliantly funny characters.]

February - The Twits - Roald Dahl [Mr. and Mrs. Twit are the smelliest, nastiest, ugliest people in the world. They hate everything—except playing mean jokes on each other, making their caged monkeys, the Muggle-Wumps, stand on their heads all day. But the Muggle-Wumps have had enough. They don't just want out, they want revenge!]

March - The Lost Library - Rebecca Stead [When a mysterious little free library (guarded by a large orange cat) appears overnight in the small town of Martinville, eleven-year-old Evan plucks two weathered books from its shelves, never suspecting that his life is about to change.]

April - Willowdeen - Katerine Applegate [A heartfelt story about a girl who risks everything to help a handmade creature who comes to life. When a handmade birthday gift brings unexpected magic to Willodeen and her new friend, Connor, she’s determined to speak up for the animals she loves, and perhaps even uncover the answer to the mystery of the missing hummingbears.]

May - The Wild Robot - Peter Brown [This #1 New York Times bestselling illustrated middle grade novel from a Caldecott Honor winner tells an extraordinary story full of action and thought-provoking questions as a robot learns to survive—and live—in the wilderness.]

June - The Phantom Tollbooth - Norton Juster [For Milo, everything’s a bore. When a tollbooth mysteriously appears in his room, he drives through only because he’s got nothing better to do. But on the other side, things seem different.]

July - The Little Prince - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry [The Little Prince has traveled there from his home on a lonely, distant asteroid with a single rose. The story that follows is a beautiful and at times heartbreaking meditation on human nature.]

August - The Goldfish Boy - Lisa Thompson [Lisa Thompson's debut novel is a page-turning mystery with an emotionally-driven, complex character study at its core. When a toddler staying next door goes missing, it becomes apparent that Matthew was the last person to see him alive. Suddenly, Matthew finds himself at the center of a high-stakes mystery.]

September - My Side of the Mountain - Jean Craighead George [Sam Gribley is terribly unhappy living in New York City with his family, so he runs away to the Catskill Mountains to live in the woods—all by himself. Sam learns about courage, danger, and independence during his year in the wilderness, a year that changes his life forever.]

October - The Beasts of Clawstone Castle - Eva Ibbotson [Determined to save the castle and the herd, Madlyn and Rollo audition a cast of ghosts to add some thrills to the Clawstone tours, and soon visitors are pouring through the gates. But just when things are looking up, the ghosts and children find themselves facing a great mystery.]

November - Dragons at Crumbling Castle - Terry Pratchett [A memorable cast of inept wizards, sensible heroes, and unusually adventuresome tortoises.]

December - A Boy Called Christmas - Matt Haig [One day his father goes missing, and Nikolas must travel to the North Pole to save him. Along the way, Nikolas befriends a surly reindeer, bests a troublesome troll, and discovers a hidden world of enchantment in the frozen village of Elfhelm. Nikolas may be the only person who can fix things if only he can reach his father before it's too late. . . .]
