The Bloody History Series is a series of history classes where each week students will learn about a fascinating popular cultural phenomenon during a certain period of time. In this class we'll start with examine witch lore and witch hunters in history, while looking at the cultural, international, and religious reasons behind accusations of witchcraft. Then we'll turn to the Viking Era of the Middle Ages and their culture, as we ponder how peaceful farmers turned into violent raiders for four hundred years, dominating the European landscape and changing the leadership patterns in Europe. What led to their eventual disappearance? Finally we'll examine the scullduggery of piracy, traveling around the world to look at the history of pirates in various cultures, before focussing on the hey day of pirates and privateers in the 1600's to the 1800's.

My desire is to hook learners on history, by presenting captivating people and relay how history from the past present us with an understanding of today. As a college rhetoric instructor I've found that students will learn very challenging material if they are able to present to me what they already know and either challenge that learning or build upon that knowledge. Moreover, I frame learning about history by teaching students how to become mini-academics and look at anecdotal evidence using some of the very basic skills a scientist or historian would use. Students will become active learners as they attempt to use these skills to figure out why people thought witches cast dangerous spells and hexes--and why they thought these spells worked.
