This class is an introduction to poultry science. We will explore a variety of species of “farm birds” including chickens, ducks, Guinea hens, geese, emu and more! 

Class will be discussion based with learners being encouraged to ask questions and to share by raising their hand for their turn. If learner has done the optional homework they can share either in the next class time or in the online classroom by photo. 

***NO veterinary advice will be given in this course. If you have specific questions about your birds, please contact your veterinarian. 

*** addition carefully selected YouTube videos may be safely embedded in the online classroom based on the topic of the week for those learners looking for more information on the topic of the week.

Lección 1:
Introductions and pros and cons of some poultry species
 Introductions, Sharing about the birds we have, a quick over view of a variety of poultry species and the pros and cons of ownership.                  * optional project will include researching about the species the learner chooses and share the pros and cons of having that type of bird for their own.

Designing your birds enclosure / set up needs for a variety of poultry species.
 What does a chicken flock need? What do ducks need? What about geese or a peacock? * optional project will be to draw a rendering of the type of enclosure and housing that would be needed for the type and number of birds the learner would like to own/care for.

Lección 3:
Feeding your birds and enrichment
 Feeding your birds including snacks. Enrichment and fun for birds. Do birds need toys? Fun ideas of things your birds may enjoy! * optional project - create and take a photo of or draw something that a specific species of bird might like to use for enrichment.

Lección 4:
Is my bird sick or injured? First aid kits
 Things to watch for if you think your bird may be sick or injured. What to call the vet. Bird first aid kits. * optional project- create a first aid kit or create a list of what would go in a first aid kit for poultry.

Orientación para padres
This course will briefly touch upon a few illnesses or injuries and when a vet should be called. Some learners find the discussion of sick animals to be upsetting so please be sure your learner is ok with this topic. This course will not be giving information about how to treat any illnesses or injuries. No medical advice will be given.

I have been a certified veterinary technician for more than 30 years and have a MEd from Colorado State University and a Master of Veterinary Education (MVEd) from Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. 

 I have been teaching  at a local community college in a veterinary Assistant Program and a variety of Veterinary Science and animal science programs for grades 3-5, 6-8, and high school. I am also an associate faculty member at a local university in an equine studies program. 

I am also a homeschool mom! At home, my family has 2 mini horses, a Paint horse,  4 Nigerian dwarf goats, 9 chickens and 4 cats!  

I am passionate about sharing my experience and love for animal science and veterinary science with all learners from diverse backgrounds from all around the world! If your learner has a dream to care for animals then I am excited to help them on this first steps!
