Clase del plan de estudios básico de biología para la escuela secundaria
Experiencia de clase
Nivel de inglés: desconocido
Grado de EE. UU. 8 - 10
Biology topics taught in this class include: 1. Heredity: Inheritance and Variation of Traits (Patterns are the similarities and differences in traits shared between offspring and parent or among siblings.) (Weeks 1-5) 2. Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity (Weeks 6-9) 3. Earth and Human Activity (Weeks 10-12) The Next Generation Science Standards (nextgenscience.org) will be used to guide course instruction and ensure learners have the needed skills for high school level biology. How do different natural selection pressures lead to variations in populations?Week 7Lesson 7Evidence of EvolutionWhat evidence is there that supports a change in organisms over time? Start individual species project.Week 8Lesson 8SpeciationExplore how the formation of new species occurs. Continue individual research project.Week 9Lesson 9Research PresentationsWrap up of the unit and students share their research with their classmates.Unit 3Earth and Human ActivityEarth and Human Activity3 lessons3 WeeksWeek 10Lesson 10Biodiversity and Human Impact on itWhat is biodiversity? How do humans negatively impact it? How can we positively impact biodiversity?Week 11Lesson 11Biodiversity ProjectDesign, evaluate, and refine a solution for reducing the impacts of human activities on the environment and biodiversity.Week 12Lesson 12Biodiversity and Class Wrap UpShare solutions for reducing the impacts of human activities on the environment and biodiversity. Course summary and future avenues of research for biologist.
- Design, evaluate, and refine a solution for reducing the impacts of human activities on the environment and biodiversity.
- Use a model to illustrate the role of cellular division (mitosis) and differentiation in producing and maintaining complex organisms
- Communicate scientific information that common ancestry and biological evolution are supported by multiple lines of empirical evidence.
I have successfully taught middle and high school biology for 12 years. My scientific background is in neuroscience. While the school I was teaching at transitioned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), I redesigned and implemented new biology curriculum for the district.

This course covers evolution from a purely scientific basis. Savvas' science curriculum is used to present evidence. The NGSS standards are used as a basis. While this may be a sensitive topic, this information is presented in an objective way.
