Professor Wangari Maathai founded The Green Belt Movement (GBM)  that has planted over 51 million trees in Kenya and around the world. GBM works at the grassroots, national, and international levels to promote environmental conservation; to build climate resilience and empower communities, especially women and girls fostering democratic space and sustainable livelihoods.

In this class we shall cover the biography of Wangai Maathai which includes :- Early Life, Education background and how she came to be a renowned social, environmental and political activist.  She was the first African woman to win the Nobel Prize in 2004. 

Second half of the class focuses on History, Mission and Vision of Green Belt Movement across Africa and the rest of the World. This class uses a combination of power point lectures, You Tube Videos with first hand encounter and experience with Prof. Wangari Maathai and Green Belt Movement. Join us explore what Earth Day means and how to advocate for sustainable community empowerment.
