**Please Note: This is a self-paced course, allowing your learner to watch the videos, practice the skills, and play the games when it is convenient for you. There are no live meetings for this course, but I will be available with tips, tricks, and advice to help your learner succeed.**

This fun, high energy, game-based class will help students confident with reading CVC words, digraphs (SH, CH, TH, and WH), consonant blends (bl-, dr-, etc), and long vowels using magic E to master vowel teams, diphthongs, and other basic reading strategies..

This class does not include live meetings. Instead, I will share one video each week, along with word sorts, activities, and online games to help students master each sound. In the video, I will also ask my "super important" question for the week--usually a funny and interesting way to get to know one another better! Later in the week, two reading passages will be made available. The first will be best for learners who are new to the sounds we cover. The second, our "challenge passage" will be best for learners who are reviewing or working on spelling with those sounds. Students will be encouraged to post video or audio recordings of themselves reading the passages.

I firmly believe that parents are a learner's first and best teacher. I like to create engaging and creative materials to help parents find fun ways to help reading come alive for readers.

Each week, the video introduction will consist of an introduction to a new sound, including common spellings for that sound. The video will lead students through a variety of spellings of that sound, along with relevant rules and patterns. Homework assigned will be from wordwall.net or additional activities (while activities are from wordwall.net, they are hosted on COPPA-compliant genial.ly.) A reading passage focusing on the new sound will be sent for practice. Learners should upload a video or audio recording of themselves reading the passage.

My teaching philosophy is that if students are introduced to skills in a fun way, with safe and encouraging support, the skills are more likely to stay with the learner. My classes are fun and engaging, but structured and well-organized to optimize learning. In addition to specific sound-spelling combinations, general reading strategies will be emphasized to help learners decode tricky words. My classes rely heavily on the Reading Simplified system to achieve fast results for all types of learners

Learners are invited to post videos of their practices, ask for tips and tricks if you need help, and message the teacher for any help you may need!

Weekly Schedule of Sounds/Skills:
Week 1: Long O sound (o, o_e, oa, ow, oe)
Week 2: Long E sound (e, ee, y, e_e, ea)
Week 3: Long A sound (ey, a_e, ay, ai, a)
Week 4: Long I sound (i_e, i, y, igh, ie)
Week 5: Mixed long vowel practice and tackling multi-syllable words
Week 6: r-controlled vowels
Week 7: /ow/ sound (ow, ou)
Week 8: /oo/ (o, ew, oo, ue, oe)
Week 9: /aw/ (au, aw, ough, al, augh)
Week 10: /oy/ (oi, oy)
Week 11: Hard and soft "c" and "g"
Week 12: Single and Double Consonants

This class is best for learners who have a strong, comfortable command of reading CVC words (dog, cat, man). Students should also have a basic understanding of common digraphs (ch, sh, wh, th) as well as initial and final blends (such as st-, bl-, gr-, -nd, -st). They should also have a basic understanding of long and short vowel sounds, even if they do not know all of the spelling combinations for those sounds. If your student needs extra practice with these skills first, please check out my courses Sound It Out 1 (for CVC words) or Sound It Out 2 (for blends and digraphs). Feel free to reach out if you have questions about your learner's placement.
Metas de aprendizaje
Learners will improve their reading accuracy and speed while learning advanced phonics sounds (long vowels, diphthongs, etc) using an approach based on "set for variability" (the idea that letters and letter-combinations in English can correspond with more than one sound.
