1 hora por semana. Students are welcome to work on the day's lesson ahead of time, but they don't have to. Parents may want to review the instructional pages with students in between the lessons. I highly suggest students copy each passage as IEW recommends, but I don't check it.

This is the best way to begin grammar! Students find and correct mistakes in this ongoing, fun story.

This class uses the IEW Grammar book, Nose Tree. It covers many grammar topics and can be found here:
https://iew.com/shop/products/fix-it%E2%84%A2-grammar-level-1-nose-tree-student-book

This class will meet twice a week, which is an advanced pace. This is helpful to older kids who need to start at the beginning, but who may already know the concepts.

Weeks 17-30 cover beginning capitalization, quotation marks, indenting, homophones (their/there/they're), and parts of speech (noun, verb, prep phrases. adverbs. etc). Each week includes a mix of grammatical errors to correct. Each day we will cover one week of class. Class begins with Week 17 and will end with Week 30.

Students search for and correct grammar errors. I guide and correct as we go along, and add a unique coloring system to help them see different parts of speech. I am very encouraging and many students tell me they enjoy the challenge of searching for errors and improving each day. Before beginning this class, students should know that sentences and names begin with a capital letter, and end with end marks. They should understand articles (a,an, the) and nouns.

This is the second half of the book. You are welcome to join in even if you have not worked on the first part and you can always go back and read what you missed, but it may take you a few sessions to catch on.

The IEW Grammar books are set up to practice grammar 5-10 minutes a day, for 4 days a week, for 30 weeks. We will cover "4 days," which equals 4 sentences, in EACH day of class.

I agree with IEW that your student should take the time to rewrite each week after class. This may take an additional 10-30 minutes. I will not be checking this but I do recommend it.

I do teach all levels of IEW grammar in many ways! Some of those classes can be found here:

UPDATE FOR SUMMER and FALL 2024: My video refers to the 2022-23 school year, but I'm still here! I am super happy to be starting my last year of law school. I will take the bar exam in July 2025.

FIX IT Grammar: In Fall 2024, I will teach all of Book 2 and 3, and the first half of 4 and 5. In spring 2025, I will teach the second half of 4 and 5.

WRITING: For fall 2024, my semester-long classes will use the Modern World History-Based Writing Lessons book from IEW. https://iew.com/modern-world-history-based-writing-lessons-student-book-only

If you want to see if we are a good fit before committing to a long class, drop in on one of my ongoing Friday classes!

I help children overcome their fear of failure, and I coach strong writers to continued excellence. Once children grasp specific writing concepts, they can apply their skills to all content areas. Mostly, I use the writing methods taught by the Institute for Excellence in Writing.

My youngest daughter is dyslexic and in my search to help her organize and communicate her thoughts, I discovered the writing methods of IEW. Over the last 17 years, I have studied and taught these writing methods at my kitchen table, in homeschool co-ops, and in private tutoring. Most recently, I taught IEW for seven years to middle schoolers at a public charter school in Southern California. I am currently a Registered Instructor with IEW.

I graduated from the University of Maryland with an Elementary Education degree, but I've learned way more from my own kids and hundreds of others than I ever learned in a college classroom.

Having taught on two coasts, in public, private, charter, and homeschool co-ops, I have a breadth of experience.

My classes are "pretty fun for a writing class," my students report, but they don't feel like recess. Students will practice significant writing, grammar, organizing, outlining, and speaking skills in my classes. If your child needs support, recovery, or challenge, check out my classes.
