📝Let's become better writers!📝
In the 8-week Expository Writing Unit, learners will learn about four different text structures (description, compare & contrast, cause & effect, problem & solution) and choose one to create their own unique essay and presentation catering to each learner's interests (Be You!).

Each week, there will be a lesson that will cover a specific part of the essay writing process. Lessons will be given via Google slide presentation and include continual class participation. They will be given examples to help them craft the part of their essay for that lesson. Learners will have time at the end of each class to start on their assignment. Writing assignments will be completed on a personal Google slide link the learner will receive before the course begins that the learner will type on or can print out to handwrite. They will need to complete the assignment before the next class and will receive written feedback on the assignment at the end of the following class.

⚫️Week 1: Introduction to the 4 Text Structures + Better Transition Words & Phrases
Learners will learn about the 4 text structures covered in this class (description, compare & contrast, cause & effect, and problem & solution) and choose which type of essay they will write. They will come up with a topic for their essay and learn how to write an outline of their body paragraphs. The "Be Better at" lesson will focus on using transition words better.

🔵Week 2: Better Main Idea Sentences
Learners will read and annotate an example of a descriptive essay and learn how to "Be Better at" writing main idea sentences, then write the main idea sentences for the body paragraphs of their essay.

🟠Week 3: Better Detail Sentences

🟣Week 5: Better Concluding Sentences
Learners will read and annotate an example of a problem & solution essay and learn how to "Be Better at" writing concluding sentences for their body paragraphs, then write concluding sentences for the body paragraphs of their essay.

🟢Week 6: Better Introductions
Learners will learn how to "Be Better at" writing the introduction of their essay by reading examples and practicing with peers. They will write the introduction of their essay and begin putting together their final draft using their work from each week.

🔴Week 7: Better Conclusions
Learners will learn how to "Be Better at" writing the conclusion of their essay by reading examples and practicing with peers. They will write the conclusion of their essay and add it to their final draft. Final drafts of the essay must be completed before next week's class.

🟤Week 8: Better Essays + Presentation
Learners work on a presentation slide based on their essay. Learners will be given a username and password created by the teacher using the Story Jumper platform (no email required) to design and display the information from their essay. Learners will share their presentations with the class.
Each learner will receive a certificate of completion upon completing the essay and presentation.

"Be You and Become a Better Writer" classes are designed to help learners improve their writing and express their individuality with the support and guidance of a K-12 certified English teacher.
