Congratulations, you have your first job! You can now pay for things you want without having to rely on your parents. But how will you handle when unexpected life events happen? In this class, learners will use their math and critical thinking skills while playing a game called "Adulting Jr". Learners will play the easy version of the game while the teacher directs them and use opportunities that come up as teaching moments about money management and credit. The teacher will share the game board through screen share and move the "pieces" of the game for learners. On the first day learners will set up the game. Each learner will choose their job and goal. As they navigate through the game, learners decide whether or not they will pay for expenses and try to avoid "unexpected events". But just as in life, they never know when or what unexpected life event will occur! When this happens, learners will have options to earn extra income, negotiate with "family and friends" (other players), or take out credit. But no worries, in this easy version they have fewer opportunities to land on the "unexpected events" space. Learners will play at least 1 round of the game each week, picking up where they left off in the previous week. After playing the game, during approximately the last 15 minutes of each class the teacher will discuss the topic of the week. During the last class, we will see how many goals each learner was able to achieve, how much money each ended with, and discuss the results of the game to determine strategies that may work better the next time they play the game. As a bonus, the complete game will also be sent as PDF files after class to play in person with family and friends. This is a highly interactive class. US dollars are used in the game. There are also versions of this class as self paced, one-time, and 3-day camp formats.
