Class Experience

"Congratulations, you're an adult! You have your own job, your own home, and make your own rules! You have your life all figured out, but how will you handle when unexpected life events happen?"

In this class, learners will be learning without knowing it! Learners will use their math and critical thinking skills while playing a game called "Adulting" to learn about personal finance. Learners will play the easy version of the game while the teacher directs them and use opportunities that come up as teaching moments about money management and credit. There is no need for a second screen, as the game board is shared through screen share and move the "pieces" of the game.

At setup, each learner will choose their job, goal, and housing. As they navigate through the game, learners decide whether or not they will pay for expenses and try to avoid "unexpected events". But just as in life, they never know when or what unexpected life event will occur! When this happens, learners will have options to earn extra income, negotiate with "family and friends" (other players), or take out credit. But no worries, in this easy version they have fewer opportunities to land on the "unexpected events" space.

Learners will play at least 2 rounds (depending on the number of learners enrolled and how long it takes to setup). At the end of class, we will see how many goals each learner was able to achieve, how much money each ended with, and discuss the results of the game to determine strategies that may work better the next time they play the game.

This is a highly interactive class. US dollars are used in the game. As a bonus, the complete game will also be sent as PDF files after class to play in person with family and friends.

This game is also listed as a 3 day camp, semester class, and Junior version (using hundreds of dollars instead of thousands).
Learning Goals
Learners will develop important financial literacy skills that they can use throughout their entire life: Calculating money, determining needs vs. wants, achieving goals, having a savings account, and properly using credit.
