Fundamentos de biología

In this six-week course, students will be learning the stepping stones of Biology. We will cover the foundations of what biology is, the characteristics that all living things have in common, biochemistry the chemistry of life, types of cells and the organelles within those cells and their function, how cells get energy, how cells grow and divide, along with how does genetic material get passed from one generation to the next! Each week we will meet live for an interactive lesson the learners will have challenges (practice problems) to help them gain a deeper understanding of the week's lesson.  

Week one- Learners will learn about the characteristics of life and biochemistry the important molecules in our bodies and their functions!
Week two- Learners will explore all about cells. They will learn about prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and the organelles within eukaryotic cells and their functions.
Week three- Learners will explore how cells obtain and use energy by learning about photosynthesis and cellular respiration.
Week four- Learners will look at how and why cells grow and divide in the cell cycle.
Week five- Learners will explore DNA, its shape, and its function. This week learners will start to explore genetics and how genetic material is passed from one generation to the next and practice using Punnett Squares to predict phenotypes and genotypes.
Week six- Learners will continue to practice using Punnett Squares along with learning about pedigrees and how they can be used to trace traits. 

Students will be evaluated based on check for understanding questions and challenges given throughout the class. 
This course is a great building block for students who are interested in biology and have some prior knowledge about biology or a great supplemental course for those already taking biology.
