Places, everyone! Let's dive into the drama onstage AND offstage in this funny graphic novel about friendship, crushes, and theater. Is your reader ready to explore why this wholesome book was banned in some school districts? We will discuss, possibly debate, and create our own set design all while building our love of great books. Reading the book beforehand is optional, critical thinking and having fun is mandatory! As a trauma-informed, consent-based educator, I will always invite your reader to participate but never force or shame them if they do not. I aim to make the class so engaging, they can't resist joining in the discussion!
Metas de aprendizaje
Participants will:
- Practice making inferences using a graphic novel text
- Explore sensitive topics (name-calling, the "coming out" of two characters, crushes, other LGBTQIA+ content) in developmentally appropriate and fun ways with the guidance of a qualified educator. The conversations around sensitive topics will be explored within the framework of the major themes of the book - teamwork and friendship.
- Learn skills for discussing/debating whether a book should be banned/limited to certain audiences
- Create their own set design page with "drama" from their own life in mind

This will not be a program about sexual orientation, but it is possible the sexual orientation of some characters in the graphic novel may come up. The bulk of our conversations will not be about defining words like "gay" and "bisexual" which some characters do use as parts of their identity, so if your child is unfamiliar with these words it may be best to learn them before class.
If participants have questions about sexuality beyond what is relevant to the book, they will be encouraged to explore these with their families.
Again, any mention of character sexuality will be an integrated part of discussions about main themes - friendship and teamwork, or within the context of discussing why this book was banned in some school districts. Parents or guardians who have questions are encouraged to use the "Message the Teacher" button to contact me. Your concerns will always be addressed promptly and thoughtfully.
