Our classes will have a mixture of ballet technique and creativity; giving students a chance to learn and grow in their technical ballet skills, but also grow in their creativity, but creating their own solo dance about anything they like. Students will receive individualized attention and feedback on their technique from the instructor and peer feedback on their dance.

Week 1Lesson 1Introduction to BalletIn this lesson, we are introduced to those we will be learning with. Additionally, this lesson introduces the dancers' bodies to the aesthetics of ballet and the structure of a ballet class. Dancers will reflect and share their expectations and experiences of ballet so far,Lesson 2Ballet & Introduction to ImprovisationStudents will focus on knowing the sequence of one ballet exercise. Dancers will also be introduced to the skill of improvisation and given the opportunity to practice this skill and reflect on their practice.Week 2Lesson 3Ballet Feedback & ImprovisationStudents will focus on applying feedback to their ballet exercise; then begin learning a new exercise. Students will continue to practice improvisation with a different entry point (visual art). Student and teacher will reflect on class time.Lesson 4Ballet Feedback & ObjectStudents will focus on applying feedback to their ballet exercise; then begin learning a new exercise. Students will continue to practice improvisation with a different entry point (object). Student and teacher will reflect on class time.Week 3Lesson 5Ballet Feedback & PoetryStudents will continue focus on applying feedback to their ballet exercises. Students will continue to practice improvisation with a different entry point (literature). Student and teacher will reflect on class time.Lesson 6Ballet Feedback & ExerptsStudents will continue focus on applying feedback to their ballet exercises. Students will continue to practice improvisation with a different entry point (literature). Student and teacher will reflect on class time.Week 4Lesson 7Ballet Center & CompositionStudents will continue to receive feedback on ballet technique; begin learning short center exercise. Students will be introduced to composition study assignment to be presented on the last day of class.Lesson 8Ballet Center & Compositional ElementsStudents will continue to focus on applying feedback to their movement; continue learning center exercise. Students will be introduced to basic compositional elements such as stillness/traveling, facings, and pathways.Week 5Lesson 9Ballet & RubricsStudents will be continue to master ballet technique. Practice improvising by reviewing the various entry points. Then, be introduced to ballet rubric and composition rubric.Lesson 10Ballet & Composition Work TimeStudents will continue to build technical elements of ballet, peer assess a classmate in the technique. Then, work on their dance composition.Week 6Lesson 11Ballet Peer AssessmentStudents will continue to build technical elements of ballet. Then receive peer feedback their dance composition.Lesson 12Ballet & Composition Peer FeedbackStudents will continue to build technical elements of ballet. Then receive peer feedback their dance composition.Week 7Lesson 13Ballet AssessmentStudents will be given a few minutes to warm up and review ballet rubric. Students will be formally assessed on Ballet Technique.Lesson 14Ballet Assessment IIIStudents will be given a few minutes to warm up and review ballet rubric. Students will be formally assessed on Ballet Technique.Week 8Lesson 15Showtime!Students will engage in a ballet warm up, then present their composition pieces to the class.Lesson 16ReflectionReflection Class: Students will reflect on their time in class, identifying their strengths, weaknesses, where there is room for improvement and what can be done to achieve their next goal.

I am a certified New York State Dance Educator. I have a bachelor of Arts in Dance, and a Master of Arts in Dance Education. I have been teaching for over 15 years. I am currently the dance educator at a performing arts middle school in New York, where our dancers are trained in a variety of dance styles, perform in 3 school dance prroductions per year, including one musical.
