This class is a fun interactive class to learn the basics of caring for young children while babysitting. Students are encouraged to participate in question discussions and ask questions. It is strongly recommended but not required to have a doll and diaper available. This is a one time class with a brief introduction into caring of young children (feeding, diapering, etc.) and communication skills with the parents. The instructor will demonstrate diaper changing, bottle feeding and holding infants, as well as cutting up grapes and hot dogs for toddlers. Students can practice the skills on the dolls or any food provide they have available at home. Game and activity ideas will be discussed that would be age appropriate for toddlers and preschoolers they care for while babysitting. Prior knowledge is not required.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will improve their understanding of the role of the babysitter. They will learn skills in food prep for infants, toddlers and preschool age children including bottle feeding, cutting up food appropriate sizes, etc. They will learn questions to ask when considering a job, after accepting a job and when the job is completed.
This course does not cover CPR and First Aid, which are strongly recommened additional training.
Please bring a doll and a diaper if available for students to practice a few infant caring skills.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Kira Kjaersgaard has a B.A. in Child Development and a M.A. in Educational Psychology-Early Childhood Education. She is the oldest grandchild of 23 grandchildren. She spent her adolescence babysitting numerous cousins and neighborhood kids. She went on to develop a career educating new parents of all ages of newborn care and developmental milestones in group and at-home settings. Furthermore, her experience includes developing child development classes for teen parents and providing group care of infants, toddlers and preschoolers.
