ADHD is the most prevalent childhood psychiatric disorder in Canada and yet still remains underdiagnosed, even though it is the most treatable (caddac.ca). Additionally, there is still a stigma associated with this diagnosis. It's our time to shine and help diminish the stigma acknowledging that we're just "Awesomely Me With ADHD." Part of accepting and learning how to live with this neurodevelopmental disorder is finding the ways it helps makes us awesome! In that process, it is important to work on our self-advocacy skills in order to foster a sense of empowerment. This class is learner-centered, we will focus on our thumbs up and thumbs down, utilizing this space as both a support and social classroom. We will engage in various real-life scenarios that learners in the classroom share, to further develop our understanding and skill base of the various concepts being discussed. Utilizing a strength-based approach, learners will discuss positive and not-so-positive ways ADHD may impact lives. Learners will focus on being their awesome selves while accepting ways that ADHD can be difficult in everyday life. Additionally, we will talk about how parts of our daily life are actually enhanced, yes enhanced, by our ADHD! We will review various strategies (through sharing peers' and teacher's experiences) that can be employed regularly to support our executive functioning skills. Learner-to-learner interaction is encouraged throughout the class. The class structure is as follows: - introductions/check-in's - focus on our “thumbs up” - “thumbs down” sharing and ideas for plans - Ms. Sheera's weekly secret awesome ADHD skill/quality Classes are only 30 minutes long to help sustain focus and attention and are kept very small, we all need our time to shine! **This class is taught by a teacher who was finally diagnosed with ADHD in her late 30’s! As well as, who has a child with ADHD and has worked in the public school system with students with ADHD for the last 23 years. Been there, and probably have seen/felt/done that :)** **Please note, ADHD specific content (explaining what ADHD is, types of ADHD, specific strategies- other than what learners share during class) is not incorporated into this social class.
