Welcome, animal lovers! In this class that meets each weekday, we will learn about a different animal each day. Our class discussion will be based on learner interest, and may include habitat, diet, movement, family groups, and animal babies. I keep the class accessible to young learners, while still introducing important concepts and vocabulary related to biology. As we chat, I will provide a few images of the animal. I invite learners to draw as we talk - this is not a guided drawing, but a chance for learners to use their own creativity and observational skills to make a picture.

At the end of our class time, we play a simple game to review the knowledge gained in class. Anyone who would like to share their drawing at the end of class is welcome to.

This class is conversational, and learners are encouraged to contribute throughout class. However, I respect different learning styles and will only call on learners who have volunteered to speak. No learner is required to speak in class and no learner is required to draw.

This is a fun daily look at science and nature and I look forward to meeting young animal enthusiasts in class!

The topics you can expect are provided below. Topics may change depending on learner input - I am happy to teach the animals that your learner is most interested in (I will generally include requests in the week after they are suggested).

Week of September 23: Fast Animals
Cheetah, Peregrine Falcon, Ostrich, Gallimimus, Swordfish

Week of September 30: Venomous Animals

Metas de aprendizaje
Learners will have a chance to chat with friends and learn animal facts. This class will introduce important scientific terms, and will allow learners to gain practice with these terms as they are repeated daily. Learners will use creativity and practice drawing skills while making a picture of the animal. Learners will improve their listening skills and memory as they remember information for our fun true/false quiz at the end of class.

Hello Families!

My name is Jennifer and I taught my first class for Outschool in March, 2021. From that first class to the present, I have been so happy to teach such diverse, curious, imaginative, and AMAZING learners! I look forward to working with all of the learners who enroll in my classes.

When I am not teaching on Outschool, I homeschool my four busy children! In our home, we are crazy about science, nature, animals, Pokemon, Minecraft, playing board games and more! My kids also love connecting with other learners in a variety of Outschool classes. I come to homeschooling from a professional teaching background, and I have classroom experience in all elementary grades. Most of my experience came in middle grade math and science, and I love math and science still! I have a Bachelor of Education degree, with qualifications for both elementary and high school, and teachable subjects in math and science. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, with a psychology minor (with a focus on children’s psychology). The last 15 years of my life have been all about teaching - in the classroom, online, and in our homeschool!

As well as classroom teaching, I have tutored math (grades 5- adult), volunteered as a storyteller with the local library, been a Girl Guides Leader, taught Junior Achievement classes, and worked as a nanny and a babysitter. Our family is involved in a homeschool co-op where I have shared in teaching many homeschooled kids.

One of my favourite discoveries about homeschooling has been how exciting it is for ME to learn new things right along with my children! I love to follow my children’s interests, and so over the years I have learned about harbour seals, baseball history, cardboard engineering, bridges, ancient Egypt, ornithology and so much more! You can expect to see a wide range of interests reflected in my Outschool course offerings. I also love to hear suggestions from learners - so let me know your class ideas! I love to learn! And I love to teach others what I have learned!

When I am not homeschooling or teaching here on Outschool, you can probably find me reading! I also enjoy hiking, playing board games, and baking. I am so grateful to get the chance to work with many wonderful families through Outschool and I can’t wait to meet you and share my love of learning!
