In this 4-week writing workshop, students will learn to navigate each stage of the writing process—brainstorming, planning, drafting, revising, editing, and finalizing a complete original book. This course is designed for young writers of all experience levels who want to strengthen their writing skills while bringing their creative ideas to life. Topics Covered: - Brainstorming original ideas and choosing a genre (fiction, fantasy, graphic story, etc.) - Planning story structure, including plot, characters, setting, and conflict - Drafting a full story with a clear beginning, middle, and end - Revising to enhance descriptive language, sentence fluency, and story cohesion - Editing for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and clarity - Optional: Creating simple illustrations or formatting final copies for presentation Class Structure: Each week will focus on a different stage of the writing process, broken down into two 45-minute sessions. Sessions will typically start with a mini-lesson (5–10 minutes) introducing the day’s focus, followed by guided practice, independent writing time, and a closing reflection or share-out. Students will have opportunities to brainstorm together, receive teacher and peer feedback, and celebrate their progress throughout the course. Teaching Style: My teaching style is interactive, supportive, and highly student-centered. I believe writing should feel exciting, not intimidating, so I build a positive environment where every student's ideas are valued. I use visual aids (story maps, planning templates, checklists), model my own writing process, and provide lots of encouragement and feedback tailored to each student's goals. I also incorporate elements of choice—allowing students to pick their genre or illustrate their work if they wish—to keep the experience personal and empowering. Students will: - Participate in guided brainstorming discussions - Share ideas and ask questions in real time - Give and receive light peer feedback during revision sessions (with clear structure and kindness norms) - Have the option to read excerpts of their work aloud for celebration - Receive individualized feedback from me on their story drafts between sessions if they choose to submit them We will use collaborative discussions, writing prompts, visual organizers, live teacher modeling, and optional share-outs to ensure every student is engaged and supported throughout the writing journey. By the end of this course, learners will walk away not only with a finished book, but with a deeper understanding of themselves as authors!
