This aims to give complete beginners a start learning German. I will speak GERMAN ONLY for the entire class time. I created this immersion class, because I believe students learn best by engaging in natural speaking, writing, reading, listening activities. This class will focus on oral communication. We will communicate exclusively through speaking German and will not engage in any reading or writing. Repetition is important in an immersion class, which is why this class meets three times a week for one hour each time. There will be no explanations in English and little or no discussion of grammar. Students will gradually be introduced to new German vocabulary and phrases through simple exchanges. We will discuss subjects learners are highly familiar with, so it should be easy to glean meaning from the context. I will also use visual aids, my own brand of language teaching sign language, and other body language to convey meaning. As time goes on, we will gradually elaborate on known phrases and introduce new ones to naturally expand the learner's ability to communicate in German and understand it. NEW CHANGE!!: Starting in January 2021, short grammar tips relevant to the lesson will be posted in the classroom in between classes to help students recognize patterns in the language. The tentative schedule is as follows: Week 1 Introducing yourself. Where you are from, how old you are, what you like. Week 2 Introducing your family. Who is in your family, what they like, how old they are. (students should bring a picture of their family) Week 3 What is in your bag? Describe what is in your bag. (students should bring a purse, school bag, or other bag this week so they can take turns describing what is in their bags) Week 4 What do you like to do? Describe what you like to do. (students should bring a picture of them doing what they like to do) Week 5 What do you need? Describe what you need to do specific activities. (students should bring a picture of them doing what they like to do) Week 6 What do you have and what do you still need? Compare what you have and what you still need. Week 7 What do you like to cook? Describe what you like to cook and what you need to cook these things. Week 8 What do you like to eat? Describe what you like to eat and how it tastes.

Guten Tag and welcome to my page. I am excited to practice language with you! Having lived in both Germany and the United States, I am bilingual in German and English. As a German-English translator, ESL teacher, and German teacher, I have spent over 10 years inhabiting the crossroads where German and English come together. This experience has been an invaluable asset that helps me explain the nuances of each language to my students in simple, practical terms. I started teaching English as a second language to children in China online about one year ago and I love all of the opportunities online learning presents for engaging learning experiences.
I teach both German as a second language and English as a second language classes. My sessions focus on providing students with authentic situations in which to practice targeted skills such as grammar, vocabulary, and conversation in English or German.
I am an ATA-certified German ->English translator and hold a CELTA Certificate from Cambridge for ESL teaching, where I learned curriculum development and teaching skills that I now apply to both English and German classes. I also hold a Master of Arts in interkulturelle Germanistik (Intercultural German Studies) from the Universität Bayreuth in Germany and a Bachelor of Arts in German Studies from Weber State University in the United States. An Associate of Applied Science in Technical Drafting for manufacturing and mechanical engineering from Weber State University gives me a solid technical background as well. I love combining my technical skills with language to create interesting and unique classes for young learners.
When I'm not working, I can be found biking up to 50 miles on my trusty bicycle or trying to learn a language I don't already know (currently French).
I look forward to seeing you in class!
