Material needed for the craft: - floral foam (I found the circular one at the Dollar Store, it is 3.8 inches in diameter and 1.8 inches thick) Any floral foam that is not too large or too thick will work. Students will have to puncture it using a toothpick. - brown paper big enough to cover the surface of the floral foam (any kind or shade will work) - toothpicks - green or brown yarn - cardstock or copy paper - glue - scissors - pencil with eraser - markers, color pencils or crayons In this class, students will create a 3D craft while they learn about agriculture and root vegetables. Before we begin the lesson, we will participate in an ice breaker to get to know each other better and to make everyone feel comfortable. I will begin the class by introducing a few vocabulary words: agriculture, crops, livestock, vegetable and edible. We will also discuss the difference between fruits and vegetables. Students will have an opportunity to talk about what they know about the subject and to ask questions. During this portion of the lesson, I will act as a facilitator as students take the lead discussing ideas about the topic. I will also show students a short video to activate their prior knowledge. Next, we will begin working on our craft. We will use the first part of the class to create the "garden" by using floral foam, paper, toothpicks and yarn. The second part of the class will be spent learning how to draw the root vegetables that will be placed in the garden. While students are creating their craft, I will make sure to provide plenty of guidance to help students complete the project on their own. I will also make sure everyone is working on the same thing at the same time. During the drawing lesson, I will start by using simple lines and shapes to make sure everyone feels successful and confident.
