Please note: there's a 3-week, once-a-week version of this class too - and I have reviews for it! You can check it out here:
https://outschool.com/classes/art-class-pop-ups-101-bring-paper-to-life-make-pop-up-cards-and-books-o3RuyByT#usvmadas0y

In this class, students will learn basic pop-up techniques and how to combine them to create creative cards and books out of heavyweight paper (construction paper or cardstock)! Students will follow along step-by-step with me to learn how to fold, cut, and put together the basic box and the basic beak folds, and combine multiple pop-up cards into a book of pop-ups.

Day 1 - make cards using basic box pop-ups
Day 2 - make cards using basic beak pop-ups
Day 3 - talk about how to combine beaks & boxes, then bind pop-up cards together to create a simple book

PLEASE NOTE: To be successful in this class, kids need heavyweight paper (construction paper or cardstock!) and to be able to cut and fold well. I'll review effective techniques during the class to help with this and any future projects.

I'll do live demonstrations with the camera focused on my hands so participants can follow along with me, step-by-step, as we learn the techniques! However, it's not iterative - I don't make them make the same exact thing I do. I teach them the techniques, and then they use those techniques to make whatever they like! I ask students to share as we go, but never insist.

At the end of their three days with me, students will have a handful of pop-up cards, and a pop-up book. My goal is that they can leave the class able to teach someone else how to create these.

**SUPPLIES NEEDED: You will need to have certain supplies available for this class - please check the "Learner Supply List" section of the listing! Students will need heavier-weight paper for this class - that's very important! At least construction paper, or cardstock - not printer or notebook paper.

OUTSCHOOL/CLASS RULES OF NOTE:
1) Have a working webcam! I must see students on camera at least at the beginning of class, and if possible, I prefer that cameras stay on as I can't help kids effectively if I can't see their artwork. Please make sure that your webcam is functioning before entering the classroom.
2) Although siblings are welcome to share computers, all learners attending the class need to be individually enrolled.
3) Parents may stay nearby, but they must stay offscreen during class.

MATERIALS LIST:
-PAPER: ***PLEASE NOTE*** It is EXTREMELY challenging to make pop-ups using printer paper - pop-ups don't easily 'pop' with flimsy paper! PLEASE DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS CLASS IF YOU ONLY HAVE PRINTER OR NOTEBOOK PAPER as it will lead to high frustration for you. Students should have either 9x12 construction paper or cardstock. You'll need a good few sheets every day
-SCISSORS
-FOLDING TOOL:
Students will need something to use as a folding tool to make sharp creases - the adult version of this tool is a bone folder, but learners may use a popsicle/craft stick, a ruler, or a butter knife (as long as the edge is COMPLETELY smooth!).
-GLUE STICK (I suggest fat glue sticks instead of thin - whatever you have, please make sure it's not dried out)
-SCRAP PAPER to protect the books and the table while using the glue stick! Examples of good paper to use as scrap: junk mail or catalogs; used copy paper, plain newsprint paper, the backs of GLOSSY newspaper circulars. (Note, do NOT use pages from a newspaper - the print rubs off on hands and books!)
-Pencils and/or markers to draw with
-OPTIONAL: Washi decorative tape or other embellishments

I've been making books since I was a child, and teaching kids to make books for more than 20 years. I pride myself on offering clear instruction and tricks to help kids not just make these books with me online, but make them on their own later on!
