When you enroll in the class you'll see my welcome message. Attached to that message I have a worksheet you can use to fill-in each week during class, if you want. It's a great work sample should you need one.

Each week we travel to a new destination. We learn about a new place as if we were planning a trip to that location. What's Mumbai like? What would we want to see in Beijing? Imagine a drive around Iceland. Why are the Danes so happy?

We also use a program in this class called "Nearpod" where you'll be able to enter VR to tour the places we are visiting. The VR is super cool and Nearpod also allows us to do polls and contests during class.

Each week before we "depart for our destination, we start with some basic questions. Is it in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere? The East or West? What's the line that divides the Northern and Southern Hemispheres? What's the line that divides the Eastern and Western Hemispheres? What continent are we going to? What language is predominantly spoken? Are we flying into a large metropolitan area or a remote location? How will we get around? What type of money is used. Do we need a VISA or will a passport be sufficient? What are VISA requirements? What is the culture we are stepping into? What would be good to know before we get there so we don't needlessly offend someone?

What will we want to see while we are there, and why or how have these sites become important? Who are some important figures in the history of this destination? What are natural wonders unique to this area and what wildlife might we expect to see? What is the climate and what should we pack for our hypothetical trip? What are we going to eat? What foods are customary?

Each week as we journey to a new destination, that location makes sense based on where we were the previous week. We might travel to India from England, because of the historic ties between those countries, or from China to Mongolia because of the geographic proximity. If we were going to visit Antarctica, we'd go a place like Argentina the week before as a "launching off point" for Antarctica.

This is an interactive class. Student are invited to participate and make suggestions on what they want to do, see, learn about. I spend a significant amount of time preparing for each class, but we'll do Google searches during class to look up certain things along the way if a student poses a question I don't know the answer to. I am their guide and their leader on our journey around the world.

I'm okay admitting that this class is wildly popular. I teach 6 sections each week, often with each of the five sections sold out, and once kids join, they usually stick with me a L-O-N-G time. Dozens have been with me for more than six months, several more than a year, and a few who have been with me from the very beginning! Hope to see you in class soon!

*This class has been going on continuously since I launched it on Outschool at the end of 2019. We slowly travel around the world, picking up several countries in a region (but not all of them) and the next time we go around the world we'll pick up ones we missed the last time around. In January 2025, having visited England in our last class of 2024, we could logically then go almost anywhere (since the sun never set on the British Empire) but in January 2025 we will go the Caribbean, study several islands of the Caribbean, before touring through North and South America in the first half of 2025.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will develop an understanding of global geography, historic trade routes, political ties and colonization.

In each weekly class, students will learn key:
1. People
2. Places
3. Things
Over time, as pieces come together, they'll develop a tremendous bank of knowledge in the field of social studies.

We use a program in this class called “Nearpod.” It’s super easy to use. You will enter the Zoom classroom as usual through the Outschool website. But we’ll also use Nearpod. You can download the app or just access it from your web browser. You want to be in Nearpod! I have tons of photos, polls, VR, and a contest at the end of class. It’s best if you enter the Nearpod before you enter the classroom. YouTube! I will usually show a 1-5 minute YouTube video during class just to break up the class. If YouTube is blocked from your device, you’ll miss out on this part of class. The videos are in Nearpod and each student will click “play” on their own device.

We live in a big and fascinating world and one of my goals with my classes is to help kids develop an interest and appreciation for the world around them and different cultures. My classes draw from my own experiences as a world traveler. I've visited and lived abroad in twenty-two countries. Much of what we do in my classes is the same type of research I would do on a destination before I would travel to that country. I'm also the former deputy director of the historic home of President Ronald Reagan and in 2010 was a candidate for United States Congress and have a degree in political science from Indiana Wesleyan University.
