A zombie apocalypse may be unlikely, but even the CDC recognizes that engaging the imagination through seemingly fantastical scenarios is a great way to teach important emergency preparedness skills. In the event of a flood, earthquake, hurricane, or fire—or the rise of the undead—does your family have a family emergency plan? Where will you meet if you've been separated? What will you eat or drink? Who can you turn to for reliable information? How can you stay safe when the world is frightening? In Apocalypse Survival 101, students will learn the basics of keeping their families and themselves safe in the event of a natural or man-made disaster (from local events to apocalyptic-level chaos). We will walk through the steps of developing a family emergency plan, then students will learn how to assemble a simple "bug-out bag" that contains the important items, tools, and paperwork to weather the first 72 hours after a major crisis. In keeping with our "apocalypse survival" theme, I will also address how these same skills and tools could be applicable in a fictional apocalyptic event such as a zombie uprising – this is a fun, low stakes way to problem solve for a potential emergency. After this class, students can share this information with their families and develop an emergency plan that works for them! This version of Apocalypse Survival 101 is intended for students age 8-12. Students in this age group are less likely to be in disaster situations without immediate adult supervision (such as needing to shelter-in-place alone in a vehicle). Course content is presented in an age-appropriate way, with a focus on how the students can help their families become disaster-ready. This class focuses on PREPARATION, not PREPPING. No sensationalism, just solid reality-based emergency preparedness presented in an accessible and engaging way. Contact me to schedule a private session for your school group or Scout troop.

Orientación para padres
While all material is presented in an age-appropriate, non-sensationalized manner, some students may find the concept of disasters/emergencies distressing. The focus is on being prepared, remaining calm, and making good decisions as a family. No photographs or other images of disasters are used during this course. Please use discretion when enrolling your student if they are easily distressed by topics covered in this class. I will happily answer any specific questions you might have about course content.
While I am always happy to see learners' bug-out bags/emergency kits, PLEASE do not allow your student to open, unsheathe, or brandish a knife, axe, hatchet, or other bladed weapon or tool during class time. Students may show safely sheathed or closed blades. Students should NOT display firearms (holstered or unholstered) during class.
I am NOT able to provide specific wild food foraging information during class time. Safe foraging requires practice and experienced adult oversight. I will recommend wild food foraging guides for family use.
Please note that this is NOT a class focused on COVID-19 or any specific current pandemic or emergency. It is an emergency preparedness class that covers a variety of natural and man made disasters.
