Evolution and its processes can be a difficult subject to explain to young learners, especially those unfamiliar with the larger subject of biological sciences. This class serves as an introduction to evolution by making humans the prime focus! Students will learn about evolution and its mechanisms and how it all applies to the origins of modern humans, as well as other scientific forces that influence how evolution occurs. Each segment of the class will focus on a different topic: 1. Evolution: What is it and How Does it Work? 2. Ecology, Change, and the Earliest Human Ancestor 3. Homo neanderthalensis: All About Neanderthals! 4. Modern Humans and the Origins of Civilisation Students need only a basic awareness of evolution (that it happens!) to get started. Rather than focusing on the intricacies of DNA and genetics (which can be overwhelming), we'll use broad strokes and real-world examples to define evolution and natural selection, then apply it to modern humans and our earliest ancestors! Classes run approximately between 40-45 minutes depending on class size and participation!
Metas de aprendizaje
By the end of the course, students will understand evolution and the theories surrounding how it takes place, and be able to explain it with practical examples using Homo sapiens (modern human beings) and their direct and indirect ancestors.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Biological anthropology and evolutionary biology were major components of my Master's degree in Bioarchaeology from Tulane University. In fact, my Human Evolution professor was part of the team that recently discovered one of the "newest" human ancestors in Africa, Homo naledi! I'm passionate about the subject and fascinated by the stunning (and often weird!) life forms that result from natural selection and adaptation.
