In this class, we will look at and discuss the classic book Anne of Green Gables. We will compare the writing of Lucy Montgomery to that of Louisa May Alcott.

Week 1. Lucy Montgomery: her life and other books she wrote. What can we learn about this author?
Homework: Read Chapters 1 through 4. What can we find out about Anne and the new life that she is going to?

Week 2. What have we found out about Anne and does Marilla Cuthbert really want a girl to stay with them?
Homework: Read Chapters 5 through 9. Do the Cuthberts really have a soft spot for Anne and why do you think this?

Week 3. What have we learned about Anne of Green Gables? Are there any similarities between this author's style of writing and Louisa May Alcott's style of writing? We will look at and compare the two authors.
Homework: Read Chapters 10 through 14. What are the differences between Marilla Cuthbert in Anne of Green Gables and Marmee in Little Women?

Week 4. We will talk about the friendship of Anne and Diana compared to Laurie and Jo. We will talk about the impact Marilla is having on Anne.
Homework: Read Chapters 15 through 19. Compare Jo March and Anne of Green Gables.

Week 5. We will talk about the relationships of Anne and Diana compared to the March sisters. Also, discuss the differences between Gilbert and Laurie.
Homework: Read Chapters 20 through 23. What can we learn from Chapter 23? Are there lessons that we could still learn today from this chapter?

Week 6. We look at how one teacher can make a difference. We review the homework.
Homework: Read chapters 24 through 28. Write a paragraph about how Matthew Cuthbert impacts Anne.

Week 7. How was the impact of Anne dying her hair? Was it the same impact of Jo cutting her hair? Can we see any similarities in the two stories of Anne and Green Gables and Little Women?
Homework: Read chapters 29 through 33.

Week 8. Is Marilla's view of education similar to Marmee's in Little Women? We look at the rivalry between Anne and Gilbert and that of Laurie and Jo.
Homework: Read chapters 34 through 37.

Week 9. We will discuss how the story has developed and how the characters have developed and changed throughout the book.
Homework: Read the last chapter: Chapter 38. Write a page on why you would recommend or not recommend this book.

Week 10. We will discuss what we have learned about Anne and how her character has developed and changed. Do you think Jo March and Anne would get along?

Orientación para padres
We would look at the Anne of Green Gable series from a critical viewpoint since this series does include racism, racial slurs, stereotypes, cultural inaccuracies, harmful and inaccurate descriptions of Natives, stereotypical/racist imagery, and biased perspective which is not being promoted in this course. If racism or discrimination is brought up in class due to the book, I will address this by stating that racism or discrimination is not right because everyone has something to learn from each other, and we all have some amazing qualities about each other. Per all my classes, when a topic is brought up, I listen and address the student's concerns in a nonbiased manner, allowing each student to have an individual voice and to be heard. In this book, we see how students work past indigenous racism and become friends or work through it. We should all work together as a team: it doesn't matter your race or color; what matters is that we are learning together and learning from each other to grow the world in a better way.

I am originally from Britain, and as a child, I went around many stately homes. My parents were both born in the 1930s, and my mum's stories of WWII allowed me to see history in such a different way. I have taken many classes in history, and my love for literature has grown over the years, that I would love to share this love to allow students to see that history and literature can be fun to learn.
