This Ancient Civilizations class will explore various aspects of civilization growth and development. My goal is to inspire my learners to be historic investigators! More than just a history class- I will include opportunities for students to improve inquiry & critical thinking skills. As global citizens, I want my learners to explore more than what a textbook would provide, and to be able to interpret information from multiple sources and viewpoints. Many different types of activities will be recommended weekly to more fully immerse learners in the civilizations that we're discussing.

For each lesson, I'll post a student guide graphic organizer, which can be used as an optional note-taking resource, and an overview, with key learning objectives and optional activities that learners can explore outside of our live classes. The optional activities are included to support learners who need more practice or review, and to challenge learners who want more depth and individualized inquiry opportunities.

In our "live" classes, I will provide multiple types of learning opportunities, including teacher led "fun" lectures, discussions, videos (and clips), games, virtual field trips, and interactive activities. I encourage participation from learners, but I will not force anyone to share something outside of their comfort zone. Learners are encouraged to ask questions, if needed. A positive class culture is a must, and I request that learners take turns when participating and treat each other respectfully.

Order of topics:
Week 1: Introduction and Artifacts
Week 2: Big picture human history (focus on the shift from nomadic to sedentary)
Week 3: Mesopotamia
Weeks 4 & 5: Egypt
Week 6: India
Week 7: China
Week 8: Greece
Week 9: Rome
Week 10: Mesoamerica- (the Maya, Aztec & Inca)
Week 11: Mesoamerica (continued)

*Depending on the number of learners enrolled, and their interest in our lessons, the outline may be adjusted slightly.

Most importantly, I want all learners and parents to be 100% happy with the quality of this class. Any concerns, questions, or ideas for improvement should be communicated so that adjustments can be made accordingly. Outside of the scheduled face-to-face time, all other activities should be considered optional suggestions. Obviously, the more a learner engages with the course content, the more they will get out of the course. Communication between learners and parents, regarding the expectations for optional things, is important!

*If you are interested in this course but cannot find a scheduled day/time that works well, please contact me so we can discuss other arrangements.

Orientación para padres
This history about the Ancient Civilizations course is exciting, interesting, and will undoubtedly include sensitive subjects- as is true of all history. I will work hard to ensure discussion remains age-appropriate and pro-actively contact parents if any questionable situations occur. Enslaved labor, racial & gender discrimination, and religious struggles are common themes embedded in these history lessons. Please be aware that these inequalities will not be ignored.
