Welcome to my sewing class listing! I'm so happy you're here and I can't wait to share the sewing skills I've been gathering for over 30 years. Sewing has brought me so much joy and satisfaction and I know you will love it too.

In the first lesson of this 6 week course students will learn:
All about the features of the sewing machine, its settings, safety, threading the machine and bobbin, using the presser foot, the hand wheel, foot pedal, the back stitch button, and more. I'll also introduce some essential sewing tools that are very useful. We will also test our machines by trying out some stitches on a scrap of fabric. We will refer to the sewing machine manual for the student's sewing machine in order to learn some of the features of their machine and where to find the information in the future if needed.

In the second lesson students will:
Practice stitching, back stitching, and marking seams. We will discuss seam finishes, types of seams, trimming seams, how to keep seams straight, seam ripping, putting right sides together and more. Fabrics will also be discussed and how they behave as they go through the machine and when cut in various ways. Another point we will cover is the importance of pressing seams.

The fun starts in the third lesson:
In this lesson we will prepare some fabric to make a cloth napkin. I will guide the student through each step including cutting the fabric, preparing the seam allowance, pressing the edges and stitching the seams. This will result in a lovely napkin. The process is easy enough for students to repeat on their own and perfect for practicing their new skills. I will encourage the students to make one for each member of the family. Cloth napkins are a nice, environmentally friendly way to make a table setting look really special.

In the fourth lesson students will get to know patterns:
We will examine a commercial pattern, learn some pattern terminology, discuss the pattern markings, seam allowances, how to transfer the pattern to the fabric and more. We'll also talk about garment making, alterations and creating a muslin (or mock-up). Then we will create a pattern for a hair scrunchie. Next, we will cut out our pattern, pin it onto the fabric, cut the fabric and sew our project. The student will learn skills such as trimming the seam allowances, turning their work and several methods of sewing an opening shut and more. Finally, I will show the student how to make a more permanent pattern so that it will last for years.

In the fifth lesson:
Students will create a pattern for a small drawstring bag. I will give instructions for creating a pattern for any size bag so the student can customize the pattern later. Then we will start sewing our project. I will demonstrate how to do french seams first, then students will sew the corresponding seam on their project. We will discuss how to use various fabrics in order to make sturdier, padded or higher quality bags. Students will be encouraged to create a more permanent pattern and to write instructions and information of the pattern for future use.

In the sixth and last lesson:
We will make another easy project such as an easy mini heart pillow or cute simple stuffed animal. This will allow them to practice their skills like leaving an opening to turn the project, clipping corners and curves, stuffing a project and hand sewing the opening shut...great skills for future projects! This project can be used as a pin cushion (useful in the sewing room!) or a scented sachet using crushed herbs along with the stuffing or scented oils.

I'm looking forward to meeting you in my class! :)

>>>If you don't see a time that works for you, please let me know. I would be happy to open a more suitable time for you if possible.

My teaching style is patient, relaxed and encouraging. I want every student to feel welcome and wanted in my class!

*If a student is late I will stay at least 15 minutes, send a message as a reminder and check my messages. After 15 minutes I will leave the class.
* If a student has a lot of background noise I will mute them. If a student has animals interfering with their concentration, is playing with things not class related, or fails to bring the materials needed I am not responsible if they cannot finish the projects.
*I love all my students and really want them to feel the accomplishment that comes with making something nice. So I will do my best to help them along and remove any distractions.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn the basics of sewing and build their confidence in using a sewing machine safely.

Orientación para padres
The sewing machine and scissors will be used in this course and there are some safety concerns. While I will teach safety in this course, it is ultimately up to the parent to supervise and be nearby in case of an emergency.
Lista de útiles escolares
Learners will need these basic supplies:
(Please note that the cost of these items vary. If you need any help please feel free to contact me)

*a sewing machine in working condition
*an iron and an ironing board or heat safe surface to iron on
*scissors
*thread - a regular spool of all-purpose thread and a bobbin that we will thread together
*a hand sewing needle
*sewing machine needles (1 universal needle in the machine and at least 1 extra)
*sewing chalk or other marking tool (Frixion pens by Pilot are my favorite. Their ink disappears when heat from the iron touches it)
*a seam ripper
*fabric (Preferably cotton quilting fabric. Several different colorful prints in 1/4 yard amounts or "fat quarters" would be great.)
*pins
*a ruler or tape measure
*a piece of 1/4"x8" elastic, a little bit of poly-fil stuffing, a few buttons, and some ribbon for the drawstring
*blank paper and a pencil for the patterns

🌸 Hello! It’s so nice to meet you. I’m currently teaching the wonderful craft of crochet here on Outschool. I’ve been crocheting since I was a little girl and I still get excited about every new project I start! What makes me even happier is to see the excitement on the faces of learners when they learn to crochet themselves.
🌸I recently completed my B.A. degree in Clerical Education and I am a certified ESL teacher with a 120 hour TESOL Certificate. I’ve been a reading tutor and have taught English to many children. I've also been enrolled for many years in a training program that involves volunteering to teach people of all ages.
🌸 When my grown children were young, I enjoyed home-schooling them for part of their education. I fully support the idea of home-schooling and the appreciate the dedication of families who are able to do it.
🌸 I love crochet, crafts, sewing, cooking and organic gardening ...anything creative.
🌸 My philosophy when teaching children is to encourage and support them as much as possible, while being sure to patiently and kindly correct them when they make mistakes. I feel that there are no mistakes in my class....only opportunities to learn. I am a fan of alternative learning philosophies that allow for learners to explore their interests, learn progressively at their own level, include plenty of physical activity, and other ideas that seem to be absent in the typical classroom.
🌸 I was very shy when I was little, so I understand when students need time to warm up to new people.
🌸 I have some experience working with people with disabilities, such as autism. They have a special place in my heart along with elderly people.
🌸 My husband and I have 13 lovely backyard chickens that we enjoy taking care of. We always feed the squirrels in our back yard (along with stray cats and birds too!) and the squirrels sometimes tap on the glass door to ask for peanuts.
🌸 I’m excited to be a part of the Outschool community and I can’t wait to meet you!
