Each week I will introduce a new grammar topic or rule. I will engage the students with a read aloud, informational video, or visual representation. Students will then practice the rule with an activity. Since we meet once a week the student will have the opportunity to finish the activity and/or engage in another practice activity after class. I am designing this class in a way to make learning grammar enjoyable and applicable. Class will run through June. Here are the topics per week: Jan. 24: What is a sentence? ~ A complete sentence starts with a capital letter, ends with a punctuation mark, has a noun and a verb, and makes sense. Students will talk about what makes a sentence a sentence. They will watch a fun educational clip about sentences, practice identifying complete sentences and then have a chance to match complete sentences independently and/or with support. Jan. 31: Types of Sentences- Declarative, Interrogative, Exclamatory, Imperative ~Declarative: makes a statement ~Interrogative: asks a question ~Exclamatory: shows strong feelings ~Imperative: makes a command Students will learn a song about the four type of sentences. They will practice identifying each type of sentence with a sorting activity. Feb. 7: Capitals ~All sentences begin with a capital letter Students will learn that every sentence has to start with a capital letter. They will practice fixing sentences that need capital letters. Feb. 14: Ending Punctuation Marks ~Period, Question Mark, Exclamation Mark Students will have the opportunity to listen to a story that reviews the three ending punctuation marks. They will complete and sort sentences into the correct category. Feb. 21: Common Nouns ~ A person, place, thing, idea, or animal Students will listen to a song about common nouns and then create their own noun game. After the game is finished, each student will be able to play and practice the different types of common nouns.
