This class is part of a series of patriotic classes exploring American Symbols. The class will begin with the song "This Land is Your Land". Students will discover the history of the Lincoln Memorial including the design, the statue of Abraham Lincoln, the Gettysburg Address, events that occurred at the Memorial, and facts about Abraham Lincoln through a PowerPoint slide presentation. I will use questioning techniques and discussion as students interact with each other and with me. Following the PowerPoint, I will teach students American Sign Language to the song "This Land is Your Land" and for basic lesson vocabulary. Students will create a collage of Martin Luther King Jr. giving his "I Have a Dream" speech. They will draw, write, or tell one fact they learned. This class will be informative, engaging, and supportive in a joyful, non-partisan environment. Cameras will need to remain on throughout the class to facilitate interaction with each other and with me, and to allow me to assist in the students' sign language acquisition.

My excitement about American symbols began with travels to Washington, DC. I loved stepping onto the exact spot Martin Luther King Jr. stood for his iconic I Have a Dream speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Walking through the White House thrilled me as I imagined the historic individuals who had walked its halls. I have enthusiastically taught many students about Washington, DC through books, music, and plays. I'm so excited to share American symbols with Outschool students!
