This course covers the Civil War in the United States and the reconstruction of the south. Lessons are planned using the UCLA history standards. This is the 5th in a series to cover the 9 eras of American History. They do not need to be completed in chronological order. This class uses a mixture of lecture and interactive note-taking, discussion, and projects/games/activities that extend learning. Students will often guide their own learning by asking meaningful questions and seeking the answers through primary sources. Some activities of the class include: --gallery walk of civil war era photograph --examination of letters and articles during the era --reading diary entries of Civil War soldiers --listening to music of the Civil War --simulation of the spread of Yellow Fever --taking on roles of African Americans during reconstruction ***Before the War Began*** Day 1: Enslaved as a resilient people Harriet Tubman and others who resisted Day 2: The abolitionist movement The Fugitive Slave Act The Underground Railroad Day 3: Causes of the Civil War Various pieces of legislation the propelled the country toward war -Missouri Compromise in 1820 -Compromise of 1850 -Kansas-Nebraska Bill in 1854. Discover the Dred Scott decision and its implications The election of 1860 ***The War Begins*** Day 4: Fort Sumter decision Battles of the Civil War Day 5: Emancipation Proclamation --who did it free? Other speeches by Lincoln The original 13th amendment. Day 6: African American troops Union Vs. Confederate troops Women in the Civil War Day 7: Women in the Civil War Spies in the Civil War Day 8: Photography in the Civil War Life at war The home front ***The End of the War and Reconstruction*** Day 9: Gettysburg Address The fall of Richmond Juneteenth Day 10: Reconstruction -problems facing former enslaved African Americans
