Is your student getting stuck on longer words? English, and especially english spelling rules, can feel messy and unpredictable especially when you are learning to read. Aside from learning letter sounds, digraphs, and spelling patterns (which we cover in other classes, see below) there is another BIG trick to making reading longer words EASY and reliable. In this class we will answer these questions: What is a Syllable? Why is it important? How can it help me read longer words easily? What are the patterns to breaking words up into smaller parts? **This class is ideally for students around a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade reading level who can read words with Magic E , Bossy R, Vowel Teams, such as: brave, spoil, starve. ** In our classes, we have a student-centered approach and we like to have as little "lecture" time as possible to encourage student interaction and participation (which is how most students remember what they learn best!) What to expect: Before class: -We will send a 1 page note sheet, that you can print out (optional, but helpful), or you can bring a piece of paper to class! During Class: *Don't forget your notesheet, piece of paper, and something to write with! -5-10 minutes Introductions and Brain Warmup Activity -20 minutes - Lesson and practice activities: This is where we answer some of thosequestions and practice together What is a Syllable? Why is it important? GAME How can it help me read longer words easily? What are the patterns to breaking words up into smaller parts? (Here's the part where you'll need to take some notes!) -10 minutes GAME Students apply what they have learned in a GIMKIT or BLOOKET game that we will vote on as a class. (No other device needed) -10 minutes Reading Practice Word reading and sentence reading fluency practice with a fun twist! -5 minute Questions / Goodbye After Class: We will send you a poster to print out with all of the Syllable Types and reminder of what is a syllable and a game you can print out and play at home with the family to practice! **Don't forget to check out the next class after this to see what to do with words with Affixes (Prefixes and Suffixes) !!**

We will be using either the game site GIMKIT or the game site BLOOKET.
Depending on the technology ability of the students in the class, the teacher may only share the screen and all students will play along with the teacher on the sharedscreen , or for students who are able to they will follow a direct link to a private game for the students in the class. Students do not need to have or create an account and will only be asked to put in a player name. They can use their first name or any code name they would like for the game. All games are private and closed to only those who have the specific link. They are also timed and close after the alloted game time has passed.
