In this class students will learn about the nomenclature for common animals. The nomenclature consists of two names, both of which are derived from Latin, however, it can be derived from other languages too. Such a name is called a binomial name or a scientific name. Students will learn about the history of binomial nomenclature and how and why it is still used today through a powerpoint presentation. In addition, students will compare the Latin names for animals to their modern English names to see which English names have Latin roots. Before learning the Latin names of common animals students fill first try to pair the Latin names with the correct English name and see what pairs they come up with! A shared Google document will be used by students to practice ordering and naming different animals in a chart using what they have learned about nomenclature and taxonomy for common animals. Students do not need any prior knowledge of the Latin language to enjoy this class. However, some linguistic and grammatical characteristics of Latin will be briefly discussed.
