Each week, learners will be given a preview assignment to try before class. This assignment is meant to help learners prepare for the class session and get the most out of the discussion. Learners can use the comments thread in the Outschool classroom to discuss the preview assignment with their classmates and share any strategies they tried or questions they have. The class session will begin with a discussion of the preview assignment, so it is important for learners to have completed it beforehand or be prepared to finish it during the discussion. Completing the preview assignment during or after the class session is acceptable. During group activities in this online class, learners will have the opportunity to engage with the teacher and their peers through verbal discussions and collaborative slides. These slides are designed to facilitate thinking and organization, and learners can either use the in-built annotation tools within Zoom or request a link to the Explain Everything board to write and draw directly on the slides. All learner contributions will be monitored by the teacher to ensure they are appropriate, safe, and accurate. A recording of the session will be preserved for learners to review later. It is not intended for learners who have already studied a significant amount of Algebra 2. This class may be particularly relevant for learners who are in the Geometry year of a "sandwich system" curriculum (i.e. studying Algebra 1, then Geometry, followed by Algebra 2), those who are reviewing Algebra 1 over the summer, or those who have mostly completed an Algebra 1 curriculum and are starting to review mixed material. Learners who are most of the way through the first of three years of a high school integrated math curriculum, or further, are also on-level for this course.

Learners will work with linear, exponential, quadratic, rational, and radical equations and functions.
Learners will use properties of all real numbers, of rational numbers, of exponents, and of radicals to evaluate and rewrite functions and expressions.
Learners will combine algebraic skills with other mathematical and situational information to solve situational problems.
Learners will build confidence with algebra and understand math as a logical and sensible subject dealing with quantities, known and unknown.

Explain Everything is a shared whiteboard platform that allows learners to collaborate and share their work in real time. It is similar to Google Jamboard, but offers more flexibility and customization options. To use the platform, learners do not need to create an account and can simply access the board through a unique link. If learners do not wish to write on the board, they do not need to access Explain Everything at all – learners can simply watch and participate in the discussion in Zoom. The platform is designed to be safe and secure, and all learner information is kept confidential.

Learners who are preparing for college admissions are advised to keep a portfolio (digital or on paper) of major assignments and 2-3 different types of problems, fully worked, per routine assignment; the materials of the student's choice should be available for this from the beginning of class. Examples include a Google Drive or Dropbox folder, LibreOffice software (Writer and Math), a binder and hole-punched printer paper or a hole puncher, etc. If you may apply to multiple colleges, consider that a digital portfolio is easier to duplicate, and can be printed if a physical copy is wanted.
For this class, learners can use GeoGebra exclusively as their graphing calculator. Learners with future plans involving taking exams like the SATs should consider getting and beginning to use a calculator approved for those exams as soon as possible.
