We will explore the Speculative Fiction Genre with Afrofuturism. Afrofutrism is a movement in literature, music, art, etc., featuring futuristic or science fiction themes which incorporate elements of black history and culture. We will review and discuss related works within the genre prior to beginning to write our own works. We will analyze excerpts from the following texts and films: Pet by Akwaeke Emezi Moongirl & Devil Dinosaur Black Panther Marvel Below please find a tentative outline for class: -Welcome & Introductions: 5-7 minutes -Agenda Overview: 2-3 minutes -Writing Prompt & Share Out: 10-15 minutes Guided Practice -Large Group Discussion: Characteristics of Afrofuturism (10-15 minutes) -Genre Study: Read Excerpt from Pet & Moon Girl & Devil (10 minutes) -Share Out: Examples of Afrofuturism found with the excerpts (10 minutes) Independent Practice -Creative Writing: Student Choice (20 minutes) -Share Out (5 minutes) -Wrap Up Students will respond to one of the following Creative Writing Prompts: -Picture a group of middle school friends stumbling upon a mysterious portal that transports them to an alternate dimension. Write an adventure story where they navigate through this Afrofuturistic realm, encountering futuristic landscapes and beings that challenge their understanding of the universe. -Craft a narrative from the perspective of a robot living in an Afrofuturistic society. Explore the robot's thoughts and emotions as it grapples with questions of identity, humanity, and its unique role in shaping the future of a technologically advanced world. -Picture a futuristic dance competition set in space, where participants channel cosmic energies in their performances. Write a story where you showcase the diverse styles and movements that the characters use to showcase their celestial rhythms.
