In this class, students will learn about Katherine Johnson, an African American trailblazer who was known as a human computer. Although African Americans and women were given lesser opportunities, Johnson did not let that stop her from being such a vital person at The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for 33 years. Katherine Johnson's accomplishments inspired people of color and women from all backgrounds to pursue careers in science, engineering and mathematics. She proved that women of color are capable of succeeding at anything in life. Students will understand how Johnson's impressive math skills in calculating the flight path led to America's first human spaceflight. They will learn how her calculations also led to NASA's first successful orbit around earth. We will also have a discussion about the obstacles she faced due to her skin color and gender. At the end of class, students will understand why Katherine Johnson is an American Hero and how she continues to inspire women to pursue careers in STEM Programs. She proved that not only men, but all people, are capable of such careers, as long as they work hard. My classes are interactive, and I welcome students to participate. My classes are big on discussion and interaction depends on student participation :) Since I do encourage participation, classes may go over 5 mins, just so that all students can have a chance at speaking in class (if they choose to) If you would like to take his class on a specific day/time, please send a message. I hope to see you in class!

As an ESL Teacher and Tutor, I have taught classes on African American history, American Figures, Racism, and the civil rights movement for over 4 years. I have experience in teaching this subject to students in elementary, middle, and high school. I also have experience tutoring college students. I have a degree in Communications, so I will be able to communicate and teach this topic without being bias. I was able to research, write essays, and give speeches about this topic throughout college. I was trained by professionals to understand history and the issues surrounding history. Most importantly, I will allow each student to express their thoughts and opinions about this topic. This will help them communicate and show what they have learned. It is very important to include all students.
