Division can be frustrating for some kids, especially if they are simply trying to memorize facts with a "drill and kill" method. In this class, learners will develop an understanding of division as it relates to multiplication, connecting new learning to something they already know. Each class will consist of visual, kinesthetic, and auditory activities to engage different learning styles (so be prepared for your learner to have a place to safely jump around and move!). To practice their facts, learners will engage in cooperative games and friendly competition. In between classes, learners may be asked to complete some written work to practice the skills learned in class. Blooket games will be assigned as optional homework for extra practice.

***The November-December 2022 class will actually meet three times a week for 5 weeks (still 14 classes, no class on Friday the last week). The sequence of lessons will still be the same as below.***
Class will meet twice a week. The topic for each week is as follows:
-Week 1: Review concept of multiplication and multiplication facts
-Week 2: Introduction to concept of division
-Week 3: Relate multiplication and division through fact families - focus on 2s, 5s, and 10s facts
-Week 4: Relate multiplication and division through fact families - focus on 3s, 6s, and 9s facts
-Week 5: Relate multiplication and division through fact families - focus on 4s, 7s, and 8s facts, rules for 0 and 1
-Week 6: Divide with a remainder; Review and practice all facts by solving word problems, including interpreting a remainder
-Week 7: Multiplication and division mixed practice - facts and word problems

**Nearpod and Google Jamboard will be used throughout this course. If your learner will be joining class from a tablet, please make sure to download both the Nearpod and Jamboard apps (both free) before the first class.**

***Depending on the size of the class, breakout rooms may be used for some activities. I will go between breakout rooms to monitor activity offer any help needed. If this is an issue for your learner, please message me when you enroll so I can adjust my lesson plan.***

Perfil
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Maryland Certificado de Docencia en Educación elemental
Eighteen years as a public school teacher in Maryland and two years as an Outschool teacher have provided me the opportunity to teach learners from diverse backgrounds with a variety of learning styles. I began my teaching career in elementary school, teaching all subjects and earning my Masters of Education with a certificate in Gifted Education from Johns Hopkins University. Later, I added both Middle School Math: 6-9 and ESOL Pre-K-12 certifications to my professional certificate. Most recently, I taught middle school math, working with both accelerated students and those with Special Education needs. Because of my varied experiences, I have many strategies to help all kinds of learners.

Math is my passion because while there may only be one correct answer, there are often many different ways to solve the same problem. Exploring those different ways and finding a method of solving with which each learner feels most confident is what I love to do. I like to incorporate hands-on strategies, games, and interactive activities into my lessons to make math less scary for reluctant mathematicians and more engaging for everyone.

When I’m not thinking about math, I enjoy baking, cake decorating, drawing, working in my vegetable garden, and sewing. In my spare time, I can be found hiking, kayaking, bird watching, doing a puzzle, or assembling furniture. I look forward to meeting your learner!
