UU. 2 - 5
This class is for kids who aren't flash card kids. During each class, learners will use strategies that appeal to all their senses, helping engage the brain in multiple ways (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic) to connect with basic math facts.

Each class will focus on specific facts (ex. multiply by 6s) and follow the same structure, although the activities/strategies used in each class will be different. Here is the class structure:
-Class Introduction: Fact Focus & Strategy Instruction
-Building the Facts (visual and/or tactile strategy)
-Practice the Facts (songs/chants with movement)
-Play the Facts (game involving the facts)

Learners will be asked to move around during this class, so having an open work space that allows them to jump and have full range of motion (ex. for jumping jacks or dancing) is required.

***Note: This class focuses on strategies for the different facts but does not teach the concept of multiplication explicitly. The concept is reviewed with visuals and real-world connections, but your child should already be familiar with the concept of multiplication being equal groups and repeated addition.***

Materials:
Learners should always bring paper and a pencil to class, and they may be asked to bring other materials with them to fully participate in a specific activity. These will be listed next to the fact focus in the description and are items that can typically be found around the house.

The fall cycle of classes will begin the week of August 29. The Fact Focus for each class will be:
-Week of Jan 23: Multiplying by 0s, 1s, and 2s (a deck of cards and 10 identical small objects - ex. cotton balls, dried pasta, pennies, paper clips)
-Week of Jan. 30: Multiplying by 5s and 10s (10 nickels and 10 dimes)
-Week of Feb. 6: Multiplying by 3s (for Tuesday: piece of paper, 15 pennies, 3 nickels, and 3 dimes; for Thursday: paper and pencil)
-Week of Feb. 13: Multiplying by 4s (deck of cards, piece of paper, pencil)
-Week of Feb. 20: Multiplying by 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s (piece of paper, pencil)
-Week of Feb. 27: Multiplying by 6s (for Tuesday: 10 nickels and 10 pennies)
-Week of Mar. 6: Multiplying by 7s (paper and pencil)
-Week of Mar. 13: Multiplying by 8s
-Week of Mar. 20: Multiplying by 9s (hundreds chart)
-Week of Mar. 27: Multiplying by 11s (12 pennies and 13 dimes)
-Week of Apr. 3/10: (class meets Mon, Apr. 3 and Wed, Apr. 12) Multiplying by 12s (24 pennies and 14 dimes)
-Week of Apr. 17: Multiplying by 0s-12s - Review Games!

For future sections, here is the class sequence:
-Week 1: Multiplying by 0s, 1s, and 2s (a deck of cards and 10 identical small objects - ex. cotton balls, dried pasta, pennies, paper clips)
-Week 2: Multiplying by 5s and 10s (10 nickels and 10 dimes)
-Week 3: Multiplying by 3s (for Tuesday: piece of paper, 15 pennies, 3 nickels, and 3 dimes; for Thursday: paper and pencil)
-Week 4: Multiplying by 4s (deck of cards, piece of paper, pencil)
-Week 5: Multiplying by 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s (piece of paper, pencil)
-Week 6: Multiplying by 6s (for Tuesday: 10 nickels and 10 pennies)
-Week 7: Multiplying by 7s (paper and pencil)
-Week 8: Multiplying by 8s
-Week 9: Multiplying by 9s (hundreds chart)
-Week 10: Multiplying by 11s (12 pennies and 13 dimes)
-Week 11: Multiplying by 12s (24 pennies and 14 dimes)
-Week 12: Multiplying by 0s-12s - Review Games!

Perfil
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Maryland Certificado de Docencia en Educación elemental
Eighteen years as a public school teacher in Maryland and two years as an Outschool teacher have provided me the opportunity to teach learners from diverse backgrounds with a variety of learning styles. I began my teaching career in elementary school, teaching all subjects and earning my Masters of Education with a certificate in Gifted Education from Johns Hopkins University. Later, I added both Middle School Math: 6-9 and ESOL Pre-K-12 certifications to my professional certificate. Most recently, I taught middle school math, working with both accelerated students and those with Special Education needs. Because of my varied experiences, I have many strategies to help all kinds of learners.

Math is my passion because while there may only be one correct answer, there are often many different ways to solve the same problem. Exploring those different ways and finding a method of solving with which each learner feels most confident is what I love to do. I like to incorporate hands-on strategies, games, and interactive activities into my lessons to make math less scary for reluctant mathematicians and more engaging for everyone.

When I’m not thinking about math, I enjoy baking, cake decorating, drawing, working in my vegetable garden, and sewing. In my spare time, I can be found hiking, kayaking, bird watching, doing a puzzle, or assembling furniture. I look forward to meeting your learner!
