During Acting Out: Summer Theater Club, young actors begin each meeting with theater warm ups and games, before moving into reading scripts aloud together. We will read scripts with each learner performing a different character’s role. Students will be encouraged to create costumes and props as they perform various plays throughout the summer. Students will also be encouraged to "act out" the character roles they are reading in class. I will facilitate learners choosing roles in each script and will offer gentle pronunciation correction and help sounding out new words. Following each class’ reading time, I will ask questions to check for comprehension and facilitate a class conversation about the script. This class helps to develop fluency and comprehension, an understanding of theater, appreciation of literature, self-confidence, and it's also really fun! Additionally, we will review the structure of scripts and learn theater vocabulary such as stage directions, characters, casting, lines, scenes, acts, playwright, and more. We will practice using that vocabulary as we read scripts together. Scripts will include a range of modern and historical, comedy and tragedy, mystery and goofy. Scripts will rotate depending upon current members of the theater club to ensure that past students aren't reading the same scripts they have read in my other classes or sections of "Acting Out."
Metas de aprendizaje
The learning goals are improved reading fluency and comprehension, as well as an understanding of drama in literature. This class also allows learners to practice engaging in a conversation around a text they are reading.
