This class will be individualized to the unique student's level, musical interests and learning style. I teach a variety of styles of music, including, rock, pop, blues, country and folk music. The student can have input on the style of songs that they want to learn to play. For total beginners, we will start with the basics of holding the guitar and how to play on the frets. The student can let me know what kinds of music , bands, and styles they want to learn. I will teach the student to play some songs, at their level. They will learn how to read chord diagrams and guitar tablature. We will explore various styles of playing and different kinds of music, in order to expand the student's musical knowledge. This class is individualized to the student. I try to accomodate the musical interests and goals of the student. The student will practice both rhythm guitar and improvising a lead. We will focus on keeping a steady beat, and expand to various strumming patterns and then more complex rhythms. My teaching style is relaxed and fun, with a focus on adapting to the student's individual level and learning style. Week 1 - Assessment of the student's level and musical interests. Depending on the student, we will go over how to tune, and how to use the guitar tuna app. If the student is a beginner, I will intriduce them to guitar tablature and how to read it. We will do a song or two, to practice reading the guitar tablature. If the student already knows how to read tablature, we will practice some songs at their level and practice reading the tabs. Week 2 - Depending on the student's level, we will learn how to read chord diagrams, or work on guitar chords at their level. We will learn a song or two with guitar chords, at the appropriate level. There will a focus on steady beat and rhtyhm. Week 3 - We will practice improvising on a simple scale, depending on the level of the student. The student will create their own imrpovised solo, with a given set of notes. We will continue forward with tablature reading and chords. Week 4 - We will practice the best ways to switch between chords. Based on the student's interest, we will learn some new songs in the genre that they like. The student will practice a simple scale and improvising on that scale.

Learning goals will vary, depending on the student's individual level. Some goal may include :
Learning the parts of the guitar, and the string numbers.
Tuning their guitar, using an electronic tuner or the GuitarTuna app, or online tuner.
Learning the frets and how the dots on the guitar can help them to find the fret that they want.
Holding the guitar correctly and be able to strum with a steady beat.
Playing some songs, at their level.
Learning how to read chord diagrams and play the basic acoustic guitar chords.
Being able to play power chords, with the root on the 6th string and the 5th string.
Some simple improvisation, using a five note scale.
The student will have more confidence about playing music and learning guitar.

I taught private piano and guitar lessons at a guitar shop, for 5 years, in addition to my own private students in my studio.
I have a bachelor's degree in music education, from Towson University, plus graduate studies in music education.
