Welcome to "A Young Mans Guide to Puberty and Hygiene". I am a health and physical education teacher at a middle school in Houston, Texas. I also coach football, basketball, and track. Puberty is one the main topics that I teach every year on campus with my students as well as my athletes. This class will focus on the physical, mental, emotional, and social changes that come with puberty. Students will learn proper physiological vocabulary associated with the physical changes that boys undergo during puberty. We will also dive into how puberty affects the thoughts, feelings, and relationships that boys develop during this time in their lives. This class consist of short lectures providing information, lots of discussion, review games, and a self reflection guide for students to follow as we have discussions about each section. The purpose of the self reflection guide is to allow students to take relevant notes, write meaningful reflections about each section, and to help students fully understand the affects of puberty and their feelings about those changes. We will also discuss safe and appropriate ways to cope with each of these changes. Topics: Section One: - What is Puberty - Physical Changes - Hygiene Section Two: - Mental/Emotional Changes - Social Changes This class is designed to provide a safe and respectful environment for boys to discuss this phase of life. This class will allow for them to communicate with me as a health and physical education teacher, but will also give them the opportunity to connect with peers who are facing the same changes. There is no required experience for this class. I do hope that this class opens the opportunity for parents to have further discussion with their boys about this stage of life. Information for Parents: I am a certified teacher who teaches health and physical education. This class will be taught using the same standards that I use to teach my on campus students. The class will use genuine physiological vocabulary to describe the physical changes of the body. In addition we will focus on the mental, emotional, and social changes that occur during puberty. If you have any questions, concerns, or feedback please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I really hope that we are able to develop a parent teacher relationship that will allow you as a parent to feel comfortable reaching out to me beyond this class in support of your child.
