Pick three days in the week (outside of our class) to play your cello. I suggest you play your folk tunes three times through on each practice session. Also outside of class, brainstorm on what country you would like to travel.

Experiencia de clase

This class is a fun way to learn folk tunes from around the world with music theory concepts cleverly disguised in the class. This class would be best for cellists who have been playing for at least one to two years. I teach to the class. So in each session, I will keep with a part of tune until the class fully understands before moving on the next concept. We will do a lot of playing at the same time then at the end of class we can solo to present the understanding of the material. All Learners should come with their own cello in good working condition and properly tuned to A=440. I suggest you sign up to perform your newly learned pieces in our studio class!

Class One and Two: Learners will become familiar with "Jasmin Flower" a folk tune from China in C: major. We will play the piece using standard notation. We will have the English translation of lyrics in a separate document. We will go over a few standard facts about China. I have a print out of the song in standard notation written for two cellos (Learners will play the "Cello 1" part).
Class Three and Four: Learners will become familiar with "O Thou Dearest Maiden Mine" a folk tune from Germany in G major. We will play the piece using standard notation. We will have the English translation of lyrics in a separate document. We will go over a few standard facts about Germany. This class will discuss a "waltz" rhythm. I have a print out of the song in standard notation written for two cellos (Learners will play the "Cello 1" part).
Class Five and Six: Learners will become familiar with "Samalele" a folk tune from Brazil in F major. We will play the piece using standard notation. We will have the English translation of lyrics in a separate document. We will go over a few standard facts about Brazil. This class will also discuss complex syncopated rhythms. I have a print out of the song in standard notation written for two cellos (Learners will play the "Cello 1" part).

If the class is filled advanced cellists we can speed up and learn more folk tunes during the six weeks and I will take suggestions from the class on which country they would like to "visit". If the class needs more time with a specific piece, we will stay 3 weeks on "Jasmin Flower" and 3 weeks on "O Thou Dearest Maiden Mine".

The goal of the class to have fun with popular folk tunes from around the world and to have each cellist confidently reading sheet music. melodies reading the sheet music.
Metas de aprendizaje
The goal of the class to have fun with popular folk tunes from around the world, to gain an appreciation of a music that is different, and to have each cellist confidently perform these melodies reading the sheet music. I have a studio class on OutSchool for any age so the cellist does have a supportive place to performance and show off all their hard work.

Hello OutSchool community! I am Katie Chambers, a cellist and music educator based in New York City. I've been running my own private teaching studio of cello, piano and violin students since graduating with my Masters degree in cello performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 2005. Highlights have always been our annual recital, our various community-service concerts and ensemble recitals with other local private teaching artists. I look forward to meeting your students and sharing my experiences of traveling around the world playing the cello and hearing your students thoughts on their love of the cello. Cello should be fun and now it is!
