DESCRIPTION: In this exciting and in-depth introductory-level online course student will learn about the cultural and political history of Ancient Rome, from the city’s origins in the Iron Age (c. 800 BCE) to the end of the Roman Republic about 27 BCE. Students will have the opportunity to learn about Rome’s beginnings as a small, hilltop settlement and how it began to evolve into a world empire. By the end of the course, students will be familiar with the most important buildings, artistic works, events and historical figures of Ancient Rome during the Republic. LEARNING GOALS: This course focuses on building student's critical reading and thinking skills through the use of both ancient and modern literature. These skills will be fostered by completing writing journal entires and answering discussion questions. This class will also use Outschool classroom, Google drive, google docs, and Nearpod for assignments, discussions, and other resources. Each class will have assigned material for students to read before class. Below is an outline of subjects that will be covered. These classes are meant to be FUN, engaging, but also fact-filled. Most classes will have assigned reading or a video to watch before class. Each week has its own theme and specific topic. Topics are subject to change depending on the pace and interests of the students in class. For a comprehensive understanding of ancient Roman history the entire series should be completed. The Romans artistically admired the human form, as result a lot of material culture from ancient Rome contains nudity. Images that contain what might be considered "lewd behavior" will not be included
