Experiencia de clase

Grado de EE. UU. 6 - 8
This is an interactive, problem based class. I am a non traditional teacher so no lectures here! I do not rely on students memorizing information instead students explore concepts using brain-based learning activities in order to construct their own understanding.

This class is designed around student participation and involvement. I expect students to come to class with cameras on and to be in a quiet environment where they can remain unmuted to help facilitate conversation.

This course follows a typical 7th-grade schedule to prepare for pre-algebra. Students do not have to be in 7th grade to enroll in this course. Each week is self-contained, focusing on one skill to fully develop understanding. This means that students can join at any time. If students complete all of the weeks in the course, they will have completed a full 7th-grade math class.

Students must have a firm understanding of the following skills before enrolling in this course (All of these skills are taught in 5th and 6th grade typically):
-Adding and Subtracting Fractions
-Multiplying and Dividing Fractions
-Order of Operations
-Adding and Subtracting Decimals
-Multiplying and Dividing Decimals
-Properties of Integers (Absolute Value, additive inverse)
-Basic understanding of Percentages
-Solving 1 Step equations ( i.e. x + 5 =10)
-Basics of Ratios and Rates

After each class, students will be given a homework assignment and written and/or video notes that correlate with the lesson. If students complete and turn in the homework I will give them individual feedback and keep track of their progress.
Students enrolled for an entire semester will receive an individual transcript at the end of the semester with their strengths and weaknesses.

The materials for most classes will be paper/pencil and/or graph paper. However, there will be times students will need to print an activity. I will post all material that needs to be printed 24 hours in advance.

I am a non traditional teacher, no lectures here!
Instead my classes focus on being:
*Student Centered- they lead the pace
*Critical Thinking -complex tasks are given that may be a bit unusual but will cause students to think deeply
*Problem Solving- word problems to keep concepts in context
*Focus on discovering patterns- patterns is the basis of the study of algebra and higher levels of math thinking
*Students create their understanding versus being told what to think

I am constantly learning how to become a better math teacher! I have a Master's degree in Math Education but I don't believe that means I know everything. In fact I am constantly reading about the brain, and the best ways to teach math. I also am constantly evaluating my classes and content and making changes based on how learners interact with the material.

I have 13 years of experience in Education, and have taught math at all levels including adults.

In my down time, I love hanging with my husband, and two girls. We love to read books, play games and do math together (of course:)
